Jimmy Buffett is best known for songs about palm trees, sunshine and "boat drinks" in the escapist world of "Margaritaville." But he is also a songwriter and storyteller whose repertoire includes many songs that offer a more serious perspective on life. In addition, beyond his musical career, he is an author, Broadway producer and an entrepreneur.
During his time at Luther, Slind also headed a January term course called "From Mobile to Margaritaville: Human Geography in the Music and Fiction of Jimmy Buffett," in which students examined the musical repertoire and stories of Jimmy Buffett as a focal point for studying world geography and the human interactions associated with it through the course of history.
Slind taught in the Luther College History Department from 2000 to 2013, focusing on Scandinavian and Modern European history. His course topics included European History from 1648 to the Present, Vikings in History, Scandinavian Immigration History and Scandinavia and the Baltic, as well topics in European History, including courses covering the French Revolution, Hitler and Nazi Germany, and the Age of European Revolutions.
Slind received his Bachelor of Arts in history from Pacific Lutheran University, and his Master of Arts and doctoral degrees in history from Washington State University.
