It’s hard to believe but in just a few short weeks 68,000 Douglas County students will be headed back into the classroom for another year of learning. Opportunities are on the horizon for every one of these students including making new friends, learning new curriculum and participating in new experiences. While the majority of student learning takes place in the classroom, some pretty important connections happen outside the schoolroom walls in the form of extra- curricular activities.

Sportsmanship, citizenship, organizational skills, an increased sense of responsibility, and affinity toward the school community are just a few of the perks afforded to students involved in extra- curriculars. Most of our Douglas County kids have the resources to access additional
programming, an alarming amount do not. The Colorado Department of Education
reports that almost 12% of Douglas County students qualify for free and reduced lunch. This means that nearly 8000 of our students are living at or below 185 percent of the national poverty threshold. Students living in poverty are less likely to participate in fee based activities and more likely to become increasingly disengaged and disconnected from their school community.

At Hide In Plain Sight, we believe no student should miss out on opportunities afforded to their
classmates. Our Pre K through 12th-grade scholarship program serves to level the playing field
so all students, no matter their financial situation, can gain access to school-sanctioned extra-
curricular programs designed to enhance their education and enrich their lives. To date, Robin
Hood funds have supported students with graduation costs, books, course and tuition fees, paid
for overnight field trips and purchased necessary school supplies. The next time you see that big yellow school bus rolling by, please consider sponsoring a Douglas County student living in poverty by donating to Hide In Plain Sight’s Robin Hood fund.

Your generosity will support student participation in school sponsored athletics, fine arts, before
and after school clubs, field trips, tickets to events such as prom and homecoming and so much
more. Together we can continue to make a difference in the lives of kids, one student at a time.
