Ferrell named Citizen of the Year

Juan A. Navejar Jr.

A very surprised Lonnie Ruth Ferrell was named the 2015 Citizen of the Year at the 79th Annual Alice Chamber of Commerce Banquet.
Earlier in the week, Ruth Ferrell suffered the loss of her husband, Rev. J.N. Ferrell. With a humbled look, she smiled and said, “All I can say is Thank You.”
It is her humbleness, commitment and dedication to our community that captured Ruth this year’s coveted title of the Citizen of the Year.
This year’s winner was selected by a panel of out-of-town judges for her contributions to the Alice community with countless of hours of volunteering.
Ruth was born in Alice and attended public school graduating from William Adams High School. She is a supporter of many organizations in Alice to include the Alice Cemetery Committee. She is an appointed member of the Jim Wells County Historical Commission.
She is a very active member of the Brooks Worship Center in Corpus Christi where she serves as the Musician and Lay President as well as Secretary of the San Antonio District Lay Organizations.
Ruth considers her greatest achievement and takes pride in her research and history of the first black school founded in Alice TX in 1915 to 1964. Numerous hours were spent on this project that touched the hearts of all who were and some who continue to be part of the Alice history.
