Lemonade Day set for May 21

Juan A. Navejar Jr.

The Alice Chamber of Commerce presents Lemonade Day 2016 sponsored by First Community Bank and Texas Champion Bank on Saturday, May 21, 2016 from 10 am to 1 pm.

Lemonade Day is a community-wide educational program that teaches youth the entrepreneurial skills needed to start and operate their own business – a lemonade stand.

We wanted to do this to give our young citizens a chance to be a part of our business community while teaching them how to run a small business, “ Chamber Executive Director Juan Navejar said. “Mayor Ike Ornelas was very instrumental in kicking off this campaign.”

The Alice program is targeting students in grades third to sixth.

“We wanted students in these grades because we know they are starting to learn the value of money and are curious on how businesses operate,” Mayor Ornelas said. “We are blessed to have two local banks take charge in sponsoring this event.”

Twenty teams of three will be given $50 courtesy of our bank sponsors to purchase, promote and sell their products with lemonade being their chief product. The students will then return to the Chamber at 1 pm to cash in their sales. From their sales, 10 percent will be donated to the Alice Food Pantry and the rest divided equally among the team as their profit.

“The teams must turn in a fill-in-the-blank Business Plan provided by the Chamber as part of their participation. The Chamber has put together a fill-in the blank plan for the students,” Navejar said. “We will be limiting the program to 20 teams this year.”

A parent or guardian will monitor the team throughout the process and on Lemonade Day at all times.  The Chamber is asking 20 Chamber members to allow the students to sell their product in front of their business. A representative must report to the Chamber on May 16th to draw for their vending spot with an adult present to sign for their start-up money, business plan and complete rules.
