Alice native Dr. Gonzalez, PhD to speak at 80th Annual Banquet

The Alice Chamber of Commerce is marking its 80th Anniversary at its Annual Banquet on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at the KC Hall. This year’s is Dr. Mary L. Gonzalez is an Associate Vice President for Student Access in the division of Academic Affairs at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.  
“We are pleased to have Dr. Gonzalez a hometown resident,” Chamber Executive Director Juan Navejar said. “With the 80th Anniversary celebration we wanted to bring someone local to speak.”
Dr. Gonzalez oversees the division of Student Access, which houses 11 which is federally funded through the US Department of Education as well as a campus funded undergraduate research program. In addition, in 2014 she received a $7.2 million grant for GEARUP to provide services in the surrounding rural schools and Corpus Christi recent awards include Student Support Services and Student Support Services STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in 2015. This grant is the largest federally funded award at the university to date.
Dr. Gonzalez is a multiple graduate with two degrees in Business: Finance (1990) and Management (1989) from Texas A&I University-Kingsville. Possesses a Business Certification from the UT Austin McCombs Business School. She holds a master’s degree in Psychology from Texas A&M University-Kingsville and a Ph.D. in Educational Human Resource Development in Higher Education from Texas A&M College Station.
She has worked in higher education for 27 years and conducted training for numerous Department of Education training grants and other universities across the United States. Her philosophy in life is to take the road less traveled and all things will fall into place if your destination is to assist those that like her are first generation and low income. By helping others and giving back to the community in which she came is the best type of life she can live. By executing a theme of conscious leadership and servant leadership Dr. Gonzalez believes you will thrive in any atmosphere. In the end it is all up to you what path you take.
In 2002, Dr. Gonzalez was appointed as the first Hispanic female AVP for Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Her role is constantly fueled by the overwhelming needs of students at the university.  In her leadership role she has received over $48 million in the duration of 15 years for students who are underrepresented, low income, and 1st generation. The outreach efforts for students provide high impact services in her area and matriculation to the university. The administrative structure of her office is federally funded and to continue, the revenue stream is generated by the ability to continuously garner federally funded programs. The administration of the grants has grown and hence her area is considered the most complex department at the university. Also, Mary holds a visiting professor assignment for the sociology department where she teaches Pluralistic Society with an emphasis on diversity and multicultural populations.
Dr. Gonzalez has developed and implemented successful operations for numerous programs that assist students with completing their degrees and matriculating to graduate and doctoral programs. Her focal point is diversity through staff and concentration on advancement of STEM fields through undergraduate research. Her attention to performance and detail outcomes for students is a continual focus for all programs within her division. Providing mentorship for the future leadership is a personal goal.
She is the proud mother of two sons Richard and Romeo most recently a handsome grandson Richard Fred and is originally from Alice, Texas.
