Executive Director's Message

Juan A. Navejar Jr.

We certainly dodged a bullet with Hurricane Harvey, but for our neighbors east and north of us on the coast, the devastation was like a nightmare for those affected. I know firsthand what it is like to lose everything from a hurricane.
Recovering from a natural disaster can be hard not only on the victims but for those wanting to assist by donating. It is unfortunate that we live in a world where some would want to take advantage of those who have suffered from a disaster.
Scammers and con artists looking to prey on people who have been displaced, whose homes need extensive repairs, and on the rest of us who want to help by donating to a cause that will help them. Solicitations come in all forms, mail, electronic, telephone, etc. Scammers are getting smarter about how they can take your funds.
Here are some helpful tips to assist you when approached for funds.
Ask questions about the charity, especially if it sounds fishy. Ask if they are a paid fundraiser for the organization asking for funds. Ask what percentage of your donation will go to the charity and to the fundraising entity. If you don’t like what you hear hang up or don’t donate.
Caller ID does wonders, contact the organization with a call back. If the number is unlisted, chances are it does not exist. If they do answer ask them to send you written information about their organization or charity.
The Better Business Bureau has a listing of registered organizations or go to the Texas Secretary of State website to look them up. Trust you gut feeling. With some scammers, they will start by thanking you for your donation and if you want to make an additional donation. Be leery of this technique.
Write down name of charity and make sure you get it correctly what may sound like a legit one may be a spin off name of the original. If you notice a small difference from the name of the charity you intend to deal with, call the organization you know to check it out. Be careful about cash up front charities. If they say to wire it or overnight it that could a red light that it is not a real charity. Do not send cash donations by mail.
Finally for tax purposes a tax exempt organization means they don’t have to pay taxes. Tax deductible means you can deduct your donation on your income tax. Make sure you keep a record of your donations.
We all have a heart and want to assist in one way or another but beware of the scammers who want to take advantage of the situation.
