A very surprised John C. Bedgood was named the 2013 Citizen of the Year at the Annual Alice Chamber of Commerce Banquet.
“I did not know I was even nominated, but I want to thank who ever nominated me and those who voted for me,” Bedgood told the crowd during the banquet.
Bedgood was selected by a panel of out-of-town judges for his contributions to the Alice community with countless of hours of volunteering.
Bedgood was born in Alice and has spent most of the time in the Hub City and a business owner. He is an Army Veteran having served in the 101st Airborne Division serving in Vietnam and earning a Bronze Star. He has been a supporter of scouting since 1970 and very active in the community of Alice where he served as a youth soccer coach, a member of the Alice Coyote Booster Club. He is a past president of the St. Elizabeth Elementary PTA, a member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as Past Grand Knight.
In 1972, he joined the Alice Chamber of Commerce and served as a Board of Director and in the Chamber Hall of Honor. He is member of the Brush Country CCA where he has helped kids learn to fish through the Kids Fish program. He is a founding member of the Coyote Cooks and named Cook of the Year in 2010.
For 39 years, Bedgood has served his community as a member of the Alice Rotary Club where he has held a variety of offices including President, Assistant District Governor and District Governor.  From 2009-2013, he assisted in securing more than $20,000 in funds for Roman Gonzalez’s West Alice Youth Center. For 35 years, he has served as the Rotary Club’s Santa Claus for the Alice ISD Children’s Christmas Party.
Nominations were received in sealed envelopes and delivered to the committee in Corpus Christi by two board members of the Chamber.
