Business Reboot

Connie Laughlin

Has your business gone viral, or do you have the feeling eventually you might get kicked to the curb?  There’s a promising new world out there for business men and women.  Social Media altered all marketing; offering a lot of free advertising if it’s utilized.  In addition, there are all kinds of new technology at hand to simplify your daily objectives.

If you’re applying for a job and don’t have a healthy LinkedIn and Facebook profile with a lot of followers your resume might be lost in file 13.  In addition to being an expert in your chosen field, you might want to start blogging, tweeting, and building internet exposure.

The same holds true for businesses.  You want your website to pop up first when your industry is queried on the internet. You want it to be stunning and user friendly. You need to be in a web-based spotlight.

Before people choose to do business with you they will query your name or business website.  Then they perform due diligence on your background and certifications.  These are more important now due to risk management being a top priority now.

Companies are, or should be, streamlining each department of their business, making them lean mean money making machines. Make strategic decisions to cover your assets now, or you’ll be covering your business like a cat in a litter box later.

A keen eye on customer service is making a comeback.  Ensure your employees are trained on how to pro-actively engage with clients.  There are a multitude of outstretched hands for every dollar; you can’t afford to lose business.

Could your business use a minor facelift?  Don’t let outdated furnishings and shabby décor be the face of your business.  Inexpensive exterior facades, interior paint, furnishings, and flooring might be a good idea.

Changes in the world’s economy have never been more profound.  You must be ready to change your business model on a dime if need be.  Smart entrepreneurs are on the ball. They don’t have time for back office stuff they’re tuned into a new frequency of change looking strategically for ways to amass the most net profit.

The more technologically advanced you can be the better.  The old saying you can’t beat excellent customer service and product still holds true, but what catches the first time buyers’ eye might win in the long run.

Whenever you have employees you have issues.  It’s imperative to have full blown human resource, risk management, and safety processes in place.  If you are a small company 10 – 100 employees outsource as much as you can.  Keep your cost low and predictable.  If you’re outsourcing your HR you’re not going it alone. A (PEO) professional employer organization might provide your best protection.

The more employees you have on staff the more duties and risk you have to manage.  If you aren’t certified and attending ongoing training in human resources, multiple areas of risk management, and ongoing safety certifications then how do you know they’re on top of it?

The things employees do are as far-fetched as you can imagine.  Tenured employees have been known to steal, become addicted to drugs, or file fraudulent claims. Plus, business owners are installing security cameras and secure entry doors to their office suites. My very own husband has been shot at when his business security alarm went off in the night. And, he was pretty sure why and who was behind it. Crime happens!  Keep your eye on securing your assets, yourself, and your employees.

Large companies with HR expertise in house implement a full scope of HR initiatives to maximize employee productivity, avoid costly problems, and ultimately increase and protect profits. Smaller companies, without that expertise, are at a competitive disadvantage. A PEO firm brings that human resource expertise and value to smaller companies at a small fraction of the investment of them doing it on their own.
