Old Fashion BBQ Returns

Juan A. Navejar Jr.

After a seven year hiatus, the Old Fashion Barbecue is back. Originally sponsored by the Jim Wells County Master Planners, the Alice Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the 2011 event.
Guest speaker for the barbecue is Texas A&M-College Station Head of the Harold Vance Department of Petroleum Engineering Dr. Stephen A. Holditch.
“We felt it was time to bring back the event and having Dr. Holditch speak is ideal with the oil boom attributed to the Eagle Ford Shale,” Chamber Board President Servando Garza Jr. said.
Dr. Holditch has been the Head Engineering Dept. since January 2004. He joined the faculty at Texas A&M University in 1976 and has taught most of both the undergraduate and graduate courses. In supervising more than 100 MS and PhD students, Dr. Holditch has focused his research in areas involving gas reservoirs, well completions, and well stimulation.
Dr. Holditch was the Society of Petroleum Engineers, International (SPE) President 2002, SPE Vice President-Finance and a member of the Board of Directors for the SPE from 1998-2003. In addition, he served as a Trustee for the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME) from 1997-1998.
Dr. Holditch has received numerous awards in recognition of his technical achievements and leadership. In 1995, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and in 1997 to the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. In 1998, Holditch was elected to the Petroleum Engineering Academy of Distinguished Graduates. He was elected as an SPE and AIME Honorary Member in 2006. In 2010, Dr. Holditch was honored as an Outstanding Graduate of the College of Engineering at Texas A&M University.
“The Chamber still has a few spots for event sponsor,” Garza said. “Event sponsorship is $600 and allows each sponsor to invite 16 people to the event.”
The Old Fashion Barbecue is set for Thursday, Nov. 17 at the Jim Wells County Fairgrounds Merchants Building and begins at 6:30 p.m.
