A surprised yet humble Silvestre “Silver” Rodriguez accepted this year’s Citizen of the Year award. The long time small business owner on the Southside of town was touched by the award.
“I was not prepare to win but I want to thank my wife, Melinda and daughter Amanda, my family,” Rodriguez said, “I did not have a clue until someone told me ‘your sister is sitting over there.’ That’s when I knew something was up.”
Rodriguez is the owner of Silver Star Foods. He began his journey in retail by working at Burger King. Soon after that, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps.
He returned to Alice opening the south side convenience store. His passion for success comes from the values he learned in the armed services.
“I am grateful for this award and thank the Chamber for the recognition,” Rodriguez said.
Among some of his accomplishes include a Community Easter Egg Hunt, Toy Drive, Food Drives and donating to many events throughout the year.
“During Hurricane Harvey, Silver was there collecting funds to assist those who were affected by the Hurricane,” Chamber Director Juan Navejar said. “He also donated the
Uhaul truck to deliver the collected items to be delivered to the most devastated parts affected by the hurricane. That is the kind of person and businessman he is.”
