Juan A. Navejar Jr.

Call him a chip of the old block, in the history of the Alice Chamber of Commerce there has never been two-generations recognized as Jr. Citizen of the Year until now. Andres M. Elizondo III was named the Jr. Citizen some 21 years after his mother Dorella (Munoz) Elizondo receiving the same honor in 1990.
“I am honored to have been selected for this honor. All my peers need a round of applause because any of them were worthy of this honor as well,” Andres said.
Andres is a member of the National Honor Society, Decathlon, Honors Band, Top 20 Scholars, Who’s Who Among High School Students in America.
Community Services included volunteer Texas Girls Chess State Championship, volunteer as DJ for Senior citizen groups, Volunteer Easter Bunny, St. Joseph Alter Server, volunteer Guest Reader, helped prepare Thanksgiving and Christmas Food baskets.
The 13 students were selected by teachers and counselors at Alice High School. The candidates were Estevan Barrera, Christina Cavazos, Evan Cordova, Andres Elizondo, Michael Galvan, Victoria Guerra, Mercedez Gonzalez, Nicholas Hinojosa, Romali Kamat, Julyssa Rodriguez, Marina Saenz, Annalisa Zambrano and Jennifer Zepeda. All of the candidates met before a panel of judges who narrowed the field down to six. The six finalists were Elizondo, Guerra, Kamat, Rodriguez, Saenz and Zepeda. Aside the panel of judges, the six finalists met before the Chamber board for the final selection was made.
Each student had to write an essay as part of the selection process. The students are judged on their essays and extra-curricular activities.
The 13 candidates also competed for the Lowell Hunt Memorial Scholarship presented by the Alice Echo-News Journal for their essay competition. This year’s Lowell Hunt Scholarship was awarded to Victoria Guerra.
Elizondo was also presented the Franke Funke Scholarship by Wells Fargo Bank during the banquet.
