A very surprised Pete Ganis was named the 2014 Citizen of the Year at the Annual Alice Chamber of Commerce Banquet.

“I am really honored by this and to our community,” Ganis told the crowd during the banquet.

Ganis was selected by a panel of out-of-town judges for his contributions to the Alice community with countless of hours of volunteering.

His many contributions to the Boys and Girls Club of Alice and other organizations did not go unnoticed. Among his contributions was a 15-passenger van to the club.

“During the grand opening of the new Boys and Girls Club of Alice, Pete donated a 15-passenger van that transports an additional 52 kids a day to the club on a school daily basis,” Club Executive Director Rick Del Bosque said. “I admire his humbleness, and his unselfishness. He gives to the club without a second thought. He knows the importance and impact of what the Boys & Girls Club has on the children and youth of his community.”

Nominations were received in sealed envelopes and delivered to the committee in Corpus Christi by two board members of the Chamber.
