After a tough evening of interviews, a panel of six judges has narrowed down the list of Alice Jr. Citizen of the Year candidates.
Thirteen Alice High School seniors were interviewed with questions about themselves, their essay and their resumes. The panel narrowed the list down to five semi-finalists.
The purpose of the Jr. Citizen of the Year award is to honor and reward a special student that has demonstrated exceptional interest, understanding and involvement in citizenship and community activities.
The 13 students were selected by a panel of Alice High School staff. The 13 candidates are Katrina Cantu, Jesus Carrasco, Uriel Chapa, Bonnie Christiansen, Cecilia Eberhard, Kristen Franki, Lauryn Guerra, Michael Ryan Pakebusch, Pilar Resendez, Samantha Sauceda, Vanna Vasques, Alisa Zambrabo and Syrena Zamora.
All 13 candidates met before the committee. The five semi-finalists are Eberhard, Franki, Pakebusch, Resendez and Zamora and will be interviewed by the Alice Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 during a special called meeting.
The Jr. Citizen of the Year program is intended to encourage today’s high school students to become tomorrow’s civic leaders.
The award recipient will be announced during the 76th Annual Alice Chamber of Commerce Banquet on Tuesday, April 23, 2013. The recipient will also be presented with the Wells Fargo Bank Frank Funke Scholarship.
The 13 candidates are also vying for the Lowell Hunt Scholarship presented to the student with the best essay.
This year’s banquet theme is a “Toast to Alice”. Table sponsorships and individual tickets are still available. Guest speaker is Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp. For more information, contact the Chamber at 361-664-3454.
