Citizen of the Year applications due March 18th

Applications for the Annual Citizen of the Year are now available at the Alice Chamber of Commerce. This year’s recipient will be named this spring at the 79^th Annual Chamber Banquet.

“The purpose of the award is to seek out and publicly honor, once a year an individual who has contributed in an outstanding and exceptional manner to the betterment of our community and its citizens,” Alice Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Juan A. Navejar Jr. said.

Nominees must either be a current resident of the city of Alice, or have their principle business affiliation location in the city of Alice. A nominee must be at least 21 years of age and must be living and must be active in civic or public affairs at the time of the nomination.

Any citizen, club or organization of Alice may submit a nomination and must be made on an official entry form and accompanied by supporting material regarding the nominee’s activities.

The selection committee will base its judgment solely on the material submitted on behalf of the nominee; no additional research will be done.

The 2016 Citizen of the Year will be announced at the annual Chamber banquet set for early this spring.

Last year, Pete Ganis was named the 2015 Alice Citizen of the Year. Other recipients have included John, Bedgood, R. David Guerrero, Nena Castillo-Pitts, Tracy Little, Nora Barrera-Rycroft, Henry Herrera, Maxine Flournoy, Newell Atkinson, Gordon “Bud” Smith, Joe Merritt, Bill Findley, Ralph Gomez, Lawrence Cornelius, Rick Del Bosque and Hope Barrera to name a few.

This year’s theme is “Goodbye to the 70’s as the Chamber celebrates its 79^th Anniversary.

“We want to honor business that were operating in the 1970s and are still in business at the banquet,” Navejar said. “We are looking for old and current pictures of these businesses.”

Application deadline is 5 p.m., Friday, March 18, 2016.
