BHS CRIMINAL JUSTIC ACADEMY SEEKS YOUR HELP:
OPEN LETTER TO CHAMBER MEMBERSHIP:

I hope this letter finds you well. I want to take a moment to introduce you to our academy at Bartow High School. I am pleased to share that the Criminal Justice Academy opened at the beginning of the 2013-2014 school year as we are ending our third year. This is a very exciting opportunity for our students and for agencies in the field of Criminal Justice and our community as well. The goal of the academy is to provide students with opportunities to learn employability skills and earn industry certifications in the area of Criminal Justice.
Presently, we are focusing on the construction of an obstacle course to use in providing physical training for our students. The hope is to partner with the local police and fire agencies. This concept will allow for interaction between students and actual men and women who currently work in those capacities. Our plan is to include our Construction Academy which will give those students real world carpentry experience and help the academy sustain stability. Thanks to community support we have raised the money and obtained donated materials to accomplish our goal. It is my firm belief, that both a sound mind and body create the avenue for success. I hope you agree.
One of our projects this past year, a student security patrol, was very successful. Our students are sent out on either a golf cart or on foot. The academy hopes to include a bicycle patrol for the upcoming year. The students who are assigned to the patrol are sent out in pairs for safety and equipped with a two-way radio. At present, students only patrol the perimeter of our school campus. The major focus is on parking lots. The standard rule is that students are there for observation purposes only and to never engage suspicious persons or activity. When observations are made, depending on the situation, the students either document or immediately call in on their radio.
Due to the success of the program, we are currently looking for an additional golf cart. We are very interested in finding a good used cart. Additionally, we are looking to purchase a metal carport covering for our patrol car. Both our existing golf cart and patrol car were both donated by the City of Bartow. Our current goal is to raise $4000.00 toward this endeavor.
For every donation of $100.00, a 12”x18” aluminum ad sign will be attached to our fence line that faces South Broadway Avenue across the street from Bartow High School. (See example included) The ad will run for the entire school year (August to August) and be up for renewal every year. If the donor doesn’t wish to contribute the following year we simply return their ad sign to them.
If you have an interest in partnering with the Criminal Justice Academy at Bartow High School please feel free to contact me. We are located at 1270 S. Broadway Ave., Bartow, Florida 33830. My email address is bobby.craven@polk-fl.net. My phone number is 863-534-7400. On behalf of all of our students, we appreciate any support you can give us and in return we will not disappoint you and the community.
Check can be made payable to BHS Criminal Justice Academy. Please put “Golf cart/ Carport” in the memo.
Sincerely,
Bobby Craven (Criminal Justice Instructor)
ANY DONATION OF $100 OR MORE WILL BE RECOGNIZED WITH A METAL SPONSOR SIGN ON FENCING

Polk State College unveils 2016 Fall Arts Schedule and
Hispanic Heritage Month Festivities

Polk State College announced the new 2016 Fall Arts Schedule that will include art exhibits, receptions, concerts, cultural events, theatrical performances, a jazz jam and festivities to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

“We have an incredible variety of events lined up for the fall semester — truly something for everyone,” said Lucille Hadley, interim director of arts and cultural affairs. “The sheer volume of events that Polk State is presenting this semester is remarkable. On any given day, we’re exposing our students, employees and visitors to exciting, unique programming. This fall, the place to be for the arts is Polk State College.”

The Art Project/Club Hispano de Lakeland will join Polk State to present exhibits running through Sept. 23 that celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, one of several initiatives at Polk State to spotlight various areas of diversity within the community it serves. “We learn so much about cultural diversity from our students who come from many different countries. Though their customs vary, they all share a common goal when they come here in the pursuit of higher education,” said Hadley.

An exhibit reception will feature “In Movement” by Alexis Martinez Puleio from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1, at Polk State Winter Haven Fine Arts Gallery. The Naples artist who was born in Lakeland says she finds inspiration in the natural world, each piece striving to convey and instill the emotions captured in the painting to the viewer.

An exhibit reception will feature “From Form to Color” by Vivian Garriga from 5-7 p. on Thursday, Sept. 8, at Polk State Lake Wales Arts Center. The exhibit will be open from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday Sept. 5-23. Born in Cuba, Garriga, attended schools in Lakeland, and says she is inspired by the dramatic sunsets of the Gulf of Mexico. Her favorite painting, "Treasure Island on Fire," demonstrates how she transforms seascapes and sunsets into passionate adventures in abstraction that are flooded with color.

Also born in Cuba, the artwork of Miami Lakes artist Hermie Ibarra will be showcased in the exhibit, “Remembrances and Dreams,” from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Thursday at Polk State Lakeland Art Gallery. Her favorite subjects are women, flowers and jewelry that she paints in oils to achieve unique effects.
Polk State’s kick off celebration for Hispanic Heritage Month will be from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept.14 in the Winter Haven campus Loggia at 999 Ave. H, NE. Faculty, staff, and students are invited to the free celebration to learn more about Hispanic culture and enjoy music, food and dancing.

In addition to Hispanic Heritage Month events at its campuses, Polk State is a sponsor of Club Hispano de Lakeland’s 19th annual Hispanic Festival from noon-8 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Lake Mirror Promenade and Barnett Park in downtown Lakeland. Attendance was estimated at more than 15,000 last year. Call 863-644-5362 or visit www.clubhispanodelakeland.com for more information on the Festival. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. Visit polk.edu/boxoffice, call 863-298-6883, or email LWAC@polk.edu for more information.
