BAYCARE WELCOMES 4 PHYSICIANS
BayCare Medical Group is expanding services in Polk County with the addition of four new physicians. Preyanka Aggarwal, MD and Wendy Quiles, MD, are Primary Care Physicians, Christopher N. Nobo, MD is a gastroenterologist, and Kamal Sharma, DO, is a medical oncologist/hematologist.

Third Generation Doctor Practices Medicine At BayCare Bartow Regional Medical Center

Dr. Christopher Nobo joined BayCare Medical Group in September to open a gastroenterology specialty practice. He is on the medical staff of Bartow Regional Medical Center and Winter Haven Hospital. Dr. Nobo, a Bartow native, is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He earned his medical degree from the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa; and completed an internal medicine residency at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC and a gastroenterology fellowship with the University of South Florida.
Dr. Nobo is a member of the American Medical Association, the American Gastroenterological Association and the Florida Medical Association, and is a board member of the Florida Medical Association’s Council of Medical Education, Science and Public Health. Dr. Nobo has also participated in several research studies on gastrointestinal, esophageal, and duodenal involvement in cancer patients and evaluating nutritional deficiencies in the veteran population. He is certified in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) – a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate problems of the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas. By returning to his hometown, Dr. Christopher Nobo is continuing a family tradition with his work at Bartow Regional Medical Center. Both his father, Dr. Ralph Nobo, an obstetrician-gynecologist, and his grandfather, Dr. Rafael Nobo, who was a general surgeon, have served patients since 1963.     Dr. Wendy Quiles joined BayCare Medical Group (BMG) in October to practice at BMG Primary Care in Bartow, located at 1625 N. Carpenter Avenue. She earned her medical degree at Ross University School of Medicine in Roseau, Dominica and completed residency in family medicine at TriHealth, Bethesda Family Medicine in Cincinnati, OH.

     Dr. Kamal Sharma joined BayCare Medical Group in September to practice at Winter Haven Hospital’s Cassidy Cancer Center. She is the medical director for the Cassidy Cancer Center, and is on the medical staff of Winter Haven Hospital.
Dr. Sharma is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology. She earned her doctorate in osteopathic medicine from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in Old Westbury, NY. She completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the State University of New York (SUNY) in Buffalo, NY, where she chose to study translational research in oncology. Translational research involves analyzing patients and customizing successful cancer treatments for them when possible. She then followed with fellowships in medical oncology and hematology at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Sharma brings an extensive experience in clinical trials and drug development. An accomplished author and presenter, she has contributed her medical knowledge to numerous peer publications and associations, including Science Translational Medicine, Clinical Cancer Research and Best Practices & Research Clinical Hematology.

HOUSEHOLD HAXZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION EVENT SET
     Polk County Waste & Recycling is encouraging residents of the City of Lakeland to dispose of toxic materials in a safe and environmentally sensitive way at an upcoming Household Hazardous Waste Collection event.      A Household Hazardous Waste Mobile Unit will be on site on February 18, at the Lakeland Solid Waste Parking Lot, located at 602 Evelyn Avenue in Lakeland, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Representatives will be on-hand to collect small quantities of unused or unwanted waste products such as lawn and gardening chemicals and fertilizers, swimming pool chemicals, paint, household cleaning solutions, motor oil and used gas, batteries, fluorescent lamps, light bulbs and small appliances such as cell phones, computers, etc.
     The staff at the event will be offering convenient drive-thru disposal of items so residents won’t have to leave their vehicles.   This event is open to all Polk County residents.

WATSON CLINIC CANCER & RESEARCH CENTER SPECIALIST RECEIVES
BOARD-CERTIFICATION IN HEMATOLOGY
      Watson Clinic Cancer & Research Center Oncologist-Hematologist Dr. Neeharika S. Makani recently received her board-certification in Hematology from the American Board of Internal Medicine.
     This achievement is a testament to Dr. Makani’s qualifications and expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Dr. Makani also possesses additional board-certifications in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology.
Dr. Makani provides comprehensive Oncology and Hematology services to patients at the Watson Clinic Cancer & Research Center at 1730 Lakeland Hills Blvd. in Lakeland. She also participates in clinical research and actively enrolls patients in nationally run clinical trials.
     She received her medical degree from Boston University in Boston, MA. She performed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine, as well as a fellowship in Hematology-Oncology, at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA). She completed an additional fellowship in Hematology-Oncology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, in Boston, MA. Dr. Makani is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, the American College of Physicians and the Polk County Medical Association.

POLK VISION LEAD TEAM SEEKING LITERACY SERVICE PROVIDERS
The Polk Vision Literacy Team is leading a county-wide effort to develop a Literacy Resource Directory for PK-12 students and their families.The directory will be used by school counselors, administrators, teachers, and others in the Polk County Public School District. The Team's goal is to include as many literacy resources as possible that are available for students.

The Literacy Team is reaching out to the community to engage partners who can offer literacy support and services such as events, services or programs that offer specific strategies and skills practice; websites, books, articles, or other souces of information; events, activities programs or services for students or parents.
