ACS Relay For Life Of Bartow

Relay For Life of Bartow events are held overnight on April 20 as individuals and teams camp out at Bartow Memorial Stadium, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during Relay. Relay brings together people from all walks of life – all aimed at furthering the ACS’s efforts to save lives by helping people stay well, by helping them get well, by finding cures and by fighting back.
“Relay is a unique opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember those we’ve lost, and fight back against the disease,” said Relay Chair and Bartow Police Chief Joe Hall. “Many of the participants are cancer survivors, which serves as a reminder that Bartow is not immune to this disease and that by participating in Relay, we are joining with the ACS’s efforts to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. We are very proud that Bartow raised more than $179,000 last year and ranked 15th in the State,” he added.
The Relay’s Luminaria Ceremony takes place after sundown, honoring the community’s cancer survivors and remembering those lost to the disease. Participants will circle a track that is surrounded with glowing luminaria that bear the name of someone who has battled cancer. Luminaria may be purchased for a donation.
The event also features a “Sticky Fingers” barbecue cookoff. Amateur barbecuers will be cooking up some of the best barbecue around in a friendly competition. Dinners are sold and proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.
Relay For Life of Bartow has been chosen to take part in a cancer study with a volunteer sign up on event night. The Department of Epidemiology Research of the ACS will recruit a diverse group of adults for the long-term cancer research study, titled Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3).
