LEADERSHIP BARTOW XVI RETREAT

By Jeff Roslow, Class Historian

For instance, those in the Veterans generation know that the one in charge is the one in charge. They were children during World War II and served in Korea.
The Baby Boomer generation, does not trust leadership and questions it.
Between these two generations, a situation may be handled entirely differently.
Something goes wrong in the workforce. Bresler said that a Veteran generationer will say "the boss has to know." The Baby Boomer will think, I know this, maybe I can help.
There are not many Veterans still in the work force due to their age, but Bresler pointed out these people are the bag boys at Publix and Walmart, but don't call them bag boys. The title means something to them. Whereas the Baby Boomers don't care either way.
The X Generation is marked by the more entrepreneurs than other generations. This is an era when people got used to – and accepted – telecommuting and not having to be in the office. This marked a change that could lead to misunderstandings from other generations.
The youngest generation in the workforce are those known as Millennials, which Bresler called the most maligned and misunderstood.
The stereotype is marked by instant gratification, dreamers, feelings of entitlement, sloppier dressers; and they were brought up on such TV shows as Roseanne, The Simpsons and Married with Children.
“They don't know about waiting for hot food,” she said as the oven is more of passing thought to them as for past generations.
With all these generations working together a manager should know what options have to be played. How would a person conduct a staff meeting made up of different generations. Would all have to be in one room? Would Skype work? What work hours do best for the the person and the team. And, of course, there is dealing with employees individually. A person should know them to a degree in order to know how to instruct them on getting a job done.
Thanks to Polk State College Clear Springs Advanced Technology Center, MOSAIC, and Bartow Community Healthcare Foundation for a great retreat! Our class is really getting to know one another and we're excited to begin our second year with the knowledge that we are "THE BEST CLASS."
