MLK-KING PARADE & CELEBRATION
George H. Gause was Bartow’s first African American city commissioner and mayor, and was the first African American to serve on the Polk County School Board. He also was a businessman who was actively involved in the community.

Memories and legacies of both King and Gause will be celebrated in Bartow on January 16, 17 and 18.

On Jan. 16, the 2016 Herbert Dixon Charity Golf Tournament is set, sponsored by Bartow Deacons and Stewarts Alliance, Inc. The event takes place at Bartow Golf Course, 190 Idlewood Avenue, Bartow, and is a four-man scramble. Tee off time is 8:30 a.m. Golfers will be provided lunch at noon. The Prince and Princess Fashion Show is also held on Saturday at the Carver Recreation Center, 520 S. Idlewood Avenue, in Bartow at 5:00 p.m. Call Young for more information.

A memorial service with guest speaker Pastor Joe Halman, Senior Pastor and Founder of the Greater Works Ministries in Winter Haven, will be held at St. James AME Church, 1020 Magnolia Avenue, Bartow, on Sunday, Jan. 17, at 3:00 p.m.

Then, the Big Event, a parade celebrating the lives of King and Gause will take place on Monday, January 18. This year’s parade theme is “Remember, Celebrate, Act. The parade route begins at South Floral Avenue and West Main Street, proceeds east to Second Avenue, south to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, east across U.S. Highway 17 to Oaklawn Drive and ends at Carver Recreation Center, where a festival will be held featuring an indoor Gospelfest, food vendors, and outdoor entertainment for all ages. Parade lineup is at 10:00 a.m. at Floral and Main; the parade begins at noon. For more information, contact Mr. Young.
