MADRID'S MUSINGS

Larry Madrid, Chamber president

My congratulations go out this month to our newly-elected Chamber Board members: SEMCO’s Jennifer Sturgis, and Clear Springs’ Bob Furlong. I would also like to congratulate Lea Ann Thomas, Polk County Assistant County Manager, on being named President-elect. Sharon Casey, Community Southern Bank, will also serve as the Chamber’s Vice President of Public Affairs in 2012. All were elected at the last Board of Directors’ meeting in October, and will take office in January. Wayne Harrision and Badcock’s Nancy Young will retire at the end of this year, both serving two three-year terms.
Speaking of service, Americans will observe Veterans Day on November 11 with a wide array of celebrations to honor those who have served in our military. The Bartow Chamber will present “Hometown Heroes,” a luncheon that will pay tribute to local veterans. Last year’s event was a moving tribute to some of the area’s most patriotic citizens. If you would like to be a part of the event, sponsorships are available that will enable you to provide lunch for local veterans. A flier is available in this newsletter – just fill it out and fax it back to the Chamber.
We will also be honoring our local Teachers of the Year and School-Related Employees of the Year in November. Bartow Community Healthcare Foundation will sponsor the breakfast at the Civic Center on November 17. Did you know that Bartow is the only city in Polk County that honors their local teachers and school volunteers? We could not be prouder of the job that they do for our kids – A+!
Bartow has so much to be thankful for. Our community is full of unsung heroes, and those who are willing to give of their time and resources that improve our local quality of life. As we head for the holidays, please take a moment to give thanks for our blessings as well as a kind word to your neighbor. I wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving.

Rotary Night To Benefit Dictionary Project

Steve Githens

On Thursday, November 3, 2011, the Bartow Rotary Clubs will be holding Rotary Night in downtown Bartow: “Dictionaries for Elementary School Students Night In Downtown Bartow.”
This event will consist of participating restaurants and merchants donating 10 percent of the proceeds of the night’s revenues to the Bartow Rotary Clubs’ Elementary School Dictionary Project.
The event will start at 5:00 p.m. and end no later than 9:00 p.m.
The Bartow Rotary Clubs are attempting to raise funding to purchase a sufficient number of dictionaries for third, fourth and fifth grade students in the elementary schools in Bartow, Fort Meade and Alturas. The Bartow Rotary Clubs will purchase and distribute over 1,000 more dictionaries than the usual number that has been distributed by the Clubs over the past 10 to 12 years. The Rotary Clubs will need to raise over $3,000 to purchase the dictionaries. For more info, call Steve Githens, Bartow Rotary Club president, at (863) 529-8679.
