About Us
The Office of Veterans Services (until 1997 known as the Nevada Commission for Veterans Affairs) was created by the Nevada Legislature in 1943. The main focus was to assist veterans and/or their dependents in obtaining veterans benefits from the US Department of Veterans Affairs.A Guardianship program was added in the early 1960s, allowing the agency to be the court appointed estate guardian for veterans and/or their dependents who have been rated incompetent by the USDVA and Social Security to manage their own funds. Currently there are 40 guardianships being administrated by the agency.
In 1989 the agency consisted of 8 personnel-the Director and 3 staff in Reno, and the Deputy Director and 3 staff in Las Vegas. In 1990, an 80 acre Veterans Cemetery was opened in Boulder City and in 1991 a 40 acre Veterans Cemetery was opened in Fernley, adding 14 personnel.
In 1997, the Nevada Legislature authorized a 180 bed Veterans Home in Boulder City. The Home opened in August 2002, and presently has 162 residents. The Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley completed a $3.5 million expansion 2005. The Southern Nevada Veterans memorial Cemetery is in design phase for a $5 million expansion project at this time and is the second busiest State Veterans Cemetery in the nation.
For the 06-07 biennium the agency budget is $32 million with 194 employees.
