For contractor Greg Lopez, there is no place like home; and for him, Lake Almanor has been home since he first vacationed in the area in 1973. He made his permanent move to the area in1975, when he worked in the concrete field for several years before starting his own business as a general contractor in 1987.
Today, Lopez is licensed in concrete, general building, general engineering and holds a host of other license classifications, all of which are invaluable as he and his wife, Debi, own and operate Greg Lopez Construction, Inc & Almanor Tree Service.
“We are a full-season company and have always worked year round at Lake Almanor,” Lopez said. Under the construction and concrete umbrella, the company specializes in the three primary areas of excavation, general construction and septic systems. nder each of those service headings is afull menu that includes all phases of construction, such as installing and repairing septic systems and leach fields, tree removal, driveway design, masonry, waterfront restoration and insurance work.
New construction includes residential and commercial, site preparation, and the building of steel buildings and log homes. Among all the things he does, Lopez said custom building is his favorite. “It’s the gratitude of a project finished– the seeing it as you walk away,” he said.
What makes for success?
Greg Lopez says there are a lot offactors that contribute to the success of his businesses and places goodemployees at the top of the list. “I have a core group of loyal employees who offer quality and consistency in production. I think the business really shines; we are extremely fast on completing projects,” he said other key success factors he listed include being versatile, being knowledgeable in all the trades and being along time resident.
“I’m also excellent on warranty work andprovide a near immediate response. My clients know I’m not going anywhere, thatI will remain at Lake Almanor forever,” Lopez said.
Work and the Recession
When asked if he had been thrown any curves by the recession, Lopez said, “We have felt it, but we have remained steadily busy throughout.” He said the company has done a tremendous amount of storm damage work over the past two years. When asked if any job is too small, he said, “No, we often do‘honey do’ projects. We hang ceiling fans, install pavers in driveways, paint and complete other smaller tasks,” he said. He said the company does those things because “nine out of ten times we are called back year to year. The projects get bigger and it’s important to build good relationships. We are busy and we plan to be busier,” he added.
As to recovery, he said he is seeing “a lot of signs” and already has spring and summer contracts signed. The remodel work will include upgrading kitchens, baths and a focus on curb appeal through new exterior looks and landscape. “This is sort of my specialty, my ability to see the curb appeal. I believe each individual piece of property needs a unique structure and landscape design. If it doesn’t catch your eye, it’s just another house and another yard,” Lopez said.
As the company springs into 2012, Greg and Debi Lopez are planning to get into landscape design and installation in a larger way. “I’ve always dabbled in landscape, and in 2012 we are going to have a little added focus in this area. It’s sort of like the icing on the cake, the last thing done in building, and I own all the equipment to do it,” Lopez said. He said landscaping incorporates everything he’s already doing — plumbing, electrical, concrete, tractor and truck work.
Another major area of focus for Lopez Construction Inc. will be the building of Whisper Creek Log Homes, a venture the company began in 2009. “This is just another step in offering affordable log homes at Lake Almanor,” he said. He said there are more than 200 plans available and home sizes can range from 1,500 to 7,000 square feet. Lopez Construction Inc. plans to construct two log homes this year.
