Fall's Beauty and Activities Arrive in the Lake Almanor Basin

Author and Photos Kim James

Looking out my kitchen window I can tell fall has arrived, not just because of the subtle changes in the colors of the Willows, Cottonwoods, Aspens and meadow grasses, but my artist's / photographer's eye can tell you the hues just all turned pastel. The sun is moving to it's southern most point in the sky. In a month the shortest day of the year will be upon us and because of this, it completely softens the light, all day long, not just at dusk. Entering into the twilight of the seasons the light and the color remind me just how incredible fall is.

This is also the shoulder season for tourism. We don't see the family crowds like we experience in July and August, but we see many friends traveling together and couples here for late season camping, Park visits, fishing, golfing, bike rides and motorcycle tours, among a few of the attractions of the area. This is also the most beautiful time of year to visit  Lassen Volcanic National Park. Here at the Chamber, we are seeing many European visitors, they are here to visit our little Volcano and are pleasantly surprised to find we have a lake as well. Here is the link for some of the best hiking trails in the Park with free down loadable maps.

The Visitor's Bureau in Quincy has a wonderful web site and blog devoted to our County's Fall Tourism. Here is an article the Sacramento Bee wrote about the area.

If you are interested in being a leaf peeper or just getting real time updates on the colors this is a great link.
