National Volunteer Week April 18 - 24

Established in 1974, National Volunteer Week has grown exponentially in scope each year since, drawing the  support and endorsement of all subsequent U.S. Presidents, Governors, Mayors and other respected elected officials.

National Volunteer Week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out imaginative ways to engage in their communities. It’s about demonstrating to the nation that by working  together, in unison, we have the fortitude to meet our challenges and accomplish our goals.

National Volunteer Week is about taking action, encouraging individuals and their respective communities to be at the center of social change—discovering and actively demonstrating their collective power to foster positive transformation. National Volunteer Week is not only our       moment in time to celebrate our volunteers, but to enable a nation to share ideas, practices, and stories, wherever they happen, and shaping a movement to re-imagine the notion of citizenship for the 21st century.   http://www.handsonnetwork.org/events/nvw2010

According to Leslie Wall, the Coordinator of the local Community Connections service, “Having national recognition of such a vital community support as volunteers, inspires everyone to do what they can to make a difference.  When people are given an opportunity to engage in     meaningful activities that allows them to express their interests, use their skills, and share their wisdom in support of others, they enthusiastically step-up.”

Community Connections is a service of Plumas Rural Services and offers every community member the opportunity to do something to give back, pay it forward, and take part in meeting their own needs and those of their community by working together.  The youngest member is 8 years old and the oldest is 84.  Every member is valued equally and earns one time credit for every hour of service.  There are over 130 members and sponsors working together to build a better Plumas County – your participation, along with your unique skills, helps build the more than 220 different service activities already available.

During National Volunteer Week, Community Connections is offering FREE memberships to  everyone who applies (After April 24th the cost for membership is $20.00.)  To receive a membership form, call Leslie Wall at 283-3611 extension 18 or visit their website at www.plumasruralservices.org services/community connections
