Almanor Basin Community Consortium

The ABCC was presented to jump-start communication across sectors that would lead to collaboration on individual and collective projects or issues. Our intent was to take it slow by first initiating communication and then setting goals and implementing through collaboration. However, after Thursday night’s meeting, it would appear that taking it slow is not what is desired. Slow might be too little/too late while we continue to lose more of our youth, our families, our population and fail to address the needs of those who remain in a timely and efficient manner.

All present had a sense of urgency on some issues and exhibited a desire to work together. As exciting as this is, which we are thrilled, effective, sustainable change only happens when approached from multiple perspectives, with a variety of resources and through thoughtful planning.

The Lake Almanor Community Foundation and the Chamber are happily adapting to the synergy of the evening’s sharing of information, by changing the goal of our next meeting, in April, from one of communication to one of shared brainstorming on approaches to our common issues.

Information Shared
The sector issues and challenges collected were consistent within each sector demonstrating that no matter the industry, many of the same challenges were being faced by the entire community: declining and aging population, unskilled and poor employment pool, housing, over-regulation, cost of doing business, activities/support for children/families, need for all-season activities, community communication/involvement.

Next Meeting
The next formal meeting of the Consortium will take place in April.  But there is more we can do in the meantime.

1) We encourage/suggest that cross-sectors meet who had common challenges and chose an issue/s that can be dealt with now, i.e. low-hanging fruit. Perhaps it is as simple as sending events to be posted on Chamber’s Calendar on a timely basis; posting job opportunities at the high school, local community and state colleges; or offering an internship. The Chamber and Foundation have people willing to assist in facilitating meetings or discussions if desired. Email us at info@lakealmanorarea.com

2) The Chamber and Foundation see 2 things that can be accomplished now.
a. Communication: Utilize our Community Calendar and this Town Chatter Newsletter. Submit your sector’s events, board meetings, etc. Town Chatter goes out” to a list of 600+. If you have information, a job posting, an event, or news you would like to share, submit it to info@lakealmanorarea.com, we will include it in the next Town Chatter.
b. Volunteers: We are building the project page to begin a Community Volunteer List. Information on this will be sent out with our next email and in the upcoming Town Chatter as well as promoted on Facebook.
