Why did the Chamber Cancel Events, How the Chamber Functions, Who We Are (volunteers), and We Want to Hear from You! Many have wondered why Fall Chamber events were cancelled. While they did seem far off when the fires began, the Board based the decision to cancel on the predicted containment date and anticipated debilitating smoke negatively affecting participants in the events. The Board of Directors made the difficult decision to cancel the events to protect the Chamber’s limited funds, which would have been decimated if we had significantly reduced attendance. Putting on a big event entails more than just sending out a flyer and people showing up; there is a huge amount of behind-the-scenes work that occurs, hundreds of hours of prep time, thousands of dollars in investment, etc. In addition, many of the volunteers involved in these two events chose to return to their primary homes to escape the smoke; we lost our workforce.
