This is a part-time position limited to 29 hours per week and 1500 hours per year. No State benefits are provided.

The Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority is seeking a part-time Administrative Support Specialist within the Bureau of Law Enforcement at the ABC headquarters located in Hanover, VA office in support of a safe, orderly, regulated system for the manufacture, sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products.

Primary Duties

This position will provide excellent customer service to the general public pertaining to the licensing of businesses, collection of taxes, and the controlled distribution of alcoholic beverages. This person deals directly with the department’s customers, both internal and external. As this person is the first, and sometimes only, contact with such customers, excellent communication skills, coupled with a professional demeanor, are essential.

Duties include initiating and conducting examinations of applicants applying for ABC licenses; making recommendations for agent and director licensure approval; determining which cases warrant further investigation; imaging and indexing licensee and regional data; entering data into agency systems; analyzing and correcting data in databases; ensuring banquet and retail applications are investigated, taxes and fees are processed and licensee files and criminal records are properly maintained.

Additional responsibilities include other office assignments as necessary to provide appropriate customer service to the office and public.


Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of office policies, procedures and program requirements. Working knowledge of all enforcement responsibilities in the Regional Office and/or Satellite Office, enforcement investigative programs, policies and procedures. Considerable knowledge of applicable computer software programs. Working knowledge of types and needs of customers served and customer relation techniques.

Demonstrated ability to perform a wide variety of complex programs and operational support duties. Demonstrated ability to independently compose correspondence. Ability to exercise independent judgment. Ability to handle matters of high confidentiality. Technical and administrative skill in problem solving. Ability to communicate verbally, which may include high stress situations. Customer relations ability. Ability to handle multiple priorities.

Qualified applicants should have considerable knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations, and agency policies relative to corporations, partnerships, and ABC licensing as well as business English, to ensure correct composition of correspondence, spelling punctuation, and grammar usage.

Knowledge of fundamental math including basic statistics and bookkeeping practices is essential.
Experience using person a computers and various software applications is needed along with the demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with bureau management and supervisors, applicants, corporate officials, attorneys, other law enforcement agencies and the general public.

Experience performing data entry and preparing investigative reports and presenting the contents verbally is also needed as well as the ability to exercise independent judgment; work independently, maintain confidentiality; handle stressful situations; compile and analyze pertinent information; and distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information to arrive at logical conclusions.
Excellent customer service and problem solving skills are paramount.

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience involving the performance of a variety of complex program and operational support duties.

Current Notary Public or have the ability to become a Notary Public.


This is an hourly wage position, to be worked onsite during normal business hours (Monday thru Friday, 8:15 am -5:00 pm) with a maximum of 29 hours per week and 1500 hours per year. No State benefits are provided.
