The Team and the Setting

The Marketing Communications Writer works with departments across the Garden and with many audiences, including volunteers, donors, members, guests, sponsors, and partners. The position reports to the Chief Marketing Officer. Other team members include the Digital Content Strategist, Visual Media Specialist, and paid interns.

With more than 50 acres of gardens, there may not be a better office setting in all of Richmond. However, there is some flexibility in a hybrid schedule, including remote work.


Qualifications:
To join our collaborative team, we are looking for a Marketing Communications Writer to excel in:

1. Serving as editor of the Garden’s magazine for members and donors. This encompasses scheduling and production,
including managing contributing writers and photography to ensure a variety of voices and perspectives.
2. Producing the Garden’s monthly employee enewsletter, serving as writer and editor. In this role, the position will
celebrate the Garden’s team by introducing new employees, highlighting achievements, and sharing vital
information.
3. Working with the team to write for and create fundraising materials to increase support for the Garden.
4. Serving as primary contact for tabling at community events with a marketing focus (approximately 6-8
times/year). Responsibilities include communication with the organizers, pulling together materials, and
representing and/or lining up team members and volunteers to represent the Garden at events.
5. Utilizing solid Search Engine Optimization knowledge and best practices to write blog posts and leverage web
content to develop brand awareness and consistency and increase website and in-person visitation.
6. Ensuring the Garden’s visit planning webpages are up-to-date and accurate (homepage, visit planner, dining &
shopping).
7. Working with Garden volunteers to review and edit the Garden’s monthly Volunteer newsletter, ensuring accuracy
and adherence to the brand.
8. Assisting with brochures, collateral, and special projects such as interpretive signage.
9. Helping with media relations (press releases, press kits, and related marketing materials).
10. Contributing to social media content and monitoring social media one weekend a month.
11. Working with team to generate new ideas and marketing strategies and identify cross‐promotional opportunities
with various media agencies and other stakeholder groups.
12. Assisting with other marketing duties as needed.

Qualifications
• Minimum of 3-5 years of communications-related experience, including writing and editing. The ideal candidate will
have relevant experience with a magazine, e-magazine or e-newsletter.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with a variety of internal and
external audiences.
• Experience conducting interviews and writing in various styles; strong writing and proofing skills with a
commitment to fact-checking and accuracy.
• Knowledge of Associated Press style
• A team player with emotional intelligence, flexibility and a growth mindset.
• Excellent project management skills and proven ability to manage a large number of multiple priorities and
projects.
• Fluency in written and spoken Spanish is desired.
