And the winners are... First Citizen, Jacque Schreck Jacque’s willingness to work hard behind the scenes as well as stepping forward to be a reliable leader is well known throughout the community. She has spent countless hours over the decades working to achieve Corvallis' vision of making this a vibrant place to live, work and raise a family. Jacque has served as a former City Councilor, present Chair of the Capital Improvement Program Committee, member of the Budget Committee, Corvallis-Benton Public Library Board of Directors, 2010 Trust Board, and Friends of the Library Board. Jacque works for the betterment of children and families by serving the Assistance League Board and as Trustee and officer of the Benton County Foundation. Senior First Citizen, Barbara Ross
Barbara Ross is a collaborator and coalition builder. Her work includes coordinating a mentoring program for new or struggling businesses with the Chamber Coalition and CIBA; publicizing the city's new recycling bins; organizing three community wide "Buy Local First" breakfasts in collaboration with First Alternative and CIBA; ensuring discussion among diverse groups regarding the Economic Vitality Partnership;providing shelter for homeless men and supporting local levies since 1974. Future First Citizen, Jordan Gerding Jordan, the son of Tom and Debbie Gerding, is a senior at Santiam Christian High School. He has contributed his time and energy through church, community organizations, and scouting. At school, Jordan maintains a 4.0 grade point average, is active in Wrestling and Golf, and has served on the student council. Jordan’s church missions to Uganda and Mississippi have led to his conviction that serving others enriches his life so that he can, in turn, brings new strengths to his next volunteer opportunity. Junior First Citizen Cary Stephens Cary Stephens has been a member of the Corvallis community for 11 years, and for 9 of those years he has served on the Greenbelt Land Trust board, including stints as Vice President and President. He served on the City's Open Space Commission for 8 years, chairing for 5. Working with Willamette Neighborhood Housing Services, Cary provides reduced rate legal services on affordable housing projects like CoHo housing. He's been a DCA board member for 5 years, and served on the Prosperity that Fits and Core Services Committees. Robert C. Ingalls Business Person of the Year Lyle Hutchens Lyle is known throughout the community for the way he does business – honestly, with great concern for fairness, and with the utmost integrity. His high energy and ability to organize prioritize, and deliver the best product possible has made his employees rise to meet his standards. In 1977, when children with special needs were separated from typically developing children, Bev Larson was a visionary in our community, helping all children and their families receive needed services in order to be successful in school, home and community, and to break down the barriers between integration and education. For 30 years, Bev has been a community leader in creating breakthrough programs such as integrated preschool, outpatient mental health, and OT/PT/Speech therapy. Patron & Patroness of the Arts Court and Linda Smith Linda is a poet, writer, teacher, and editor. Court is a nonfiction writer, teacher, and poet. They both provide many creative writing opportunities for the community, creating incentives for people of all ages to use writing to express their creativity, convey beliefs, chronicle history, and obtain a fuller enjoyment of life through writing and writing appreciation. Chamber Coalition Volunteer of the Year Katherine Cleland “There was one person who has contributed time, treasure, and talent to the Chamber Coalition’s success across an array of programs, consulting on marketing strategy, working through two complete revisions of our website, researching and evaluating software and tools, and serving on the strategic planning committee which created a sustainable planning strategy to make the Chamber work more effectively for both retail and traded sector members. This year’s volunteer of the year has also been highly engaged in the community, volunteering at Ashbook Independent School and serving as an active member of Zonta International, and is their current club president. Larry Stover and Irva Neyhart.Stover Neyhart & Company provides tax and financial consulting services to small businesses and individuals in the Corvallis area. Partners and staff support the community by volunteering as officers and members of boards. Members currently serve the City of Corvallis Capital Improvement Program, Corvallis City Club Steering Committee, OSU Athletic Board, OSU College of Business Dean's Circle of Excellence Advisory Board, and Willamette Neighborhood Housing. Co-Recipient, Community Organization Boys & Girls Club Helen Higgins, Director of The Boys and Girls Club of Corvallis. Formed in 1971, the Boys and Girls Club of Corvallis serves nearly 10,000 youths annually through a wide variety of programs and services. The Club serves a diverse membership, with 15% of members identifying with an ethnic group. Thousands of volunteer hours are donated annually in direct service to the members of the Club, and 80% of the Club’s annual operating funds come from direct donations from Corvallis and Benton County citizens. Co-Recipient, Community Organization, CARDV Nancy O'Mara, Director, Center Against Rape and Domestic Violence. CARDV (pronounced CARD-vuh) The Center Against Rape and Domestic Violence (CARDV) provides 24-hour safety and crisis intervention services for adult and child victims of domestic and sexual violence. These services include a 24-hour hotline, confidential emergency shelter, legal system and hospital advocacy, and on-scene crisis response. Annually, these services affect the lives of over 7,000 Linn/Benton County residents. Good Steward of the Planet Corvallis Oregon Natural Step Network Corvallis The Oregon Natural Step Network was formed to support Oregon business, government, and educational organizations interested in using The Natural Step, a science based framework for sustainability. The Corvallis Chapter was founded in 2000 by Bruce Hecht, who has worked effectively with organizations interested in learning about and moving towards sustainable practices. They were an active participant in the EVP- Prosperity That Fits committee and town hall meetings as well as consultants in the sustainability goal setting process for the City of Corvallis' first comprehensive strategic plan. The Oregon Natural Step Network- Corvallis Chapter also provides business training sessions, free public presentations, support of peer learning groups, and TNS workshops. Business Giving Recognition
