About Us
LWDT is an internationally acclaimed touring modern dance company which is known for his powerful and unique performances that blend modern dance with African, ballet, hip hop, jazz, theater, and street movement. The dance company is composed of 8 to 12 professional dancers, many of them trained and honed at the LWDT School. The Company dances works by legends of African-American Dance, including Donald McKayle, Katherine Dunham, Rennie Harris and Donald Byrd -- not to mention Lula Washington herself, and LWDT's Associate Director, Tamcia Washington-Miller.
For three decades, LWDT has groomed dancers for the touring ensemble through its own dance school. This dance school has a reputation for molding great dancers from within the inner city areas of South Los Angeles.
The dance school provides expert training and cultural enrichment in ballet, jazz, tap, african, modern, hip hop dance styles, along with basic gymnastics.
Every year the school hosts a Summer Dance Camp for kids age 7 and up. The School's Summer Intensive Workshop is aimed at youth and young adults who want to improve their dance skills, with a mind towards performing -- possibly with LWDT.
LWDT starts young people dancing early, beginning with its Youth Dance Ensemble, composed of kids ages 5 and up. The group has a Children's component, and even a Tiny Tot Dance component. Our youth dancers perform regularly in various events throughout the LA area.
LWDT's Professional Development Program prepares young dancers 17-25 to become well-rounded professional performers. Past LWDT members have graduated to perform with headline artists like Michael Jackson, Madonna and Cher. Alumni have been featured in productions of The Color Purple, Disney's The Lion King, and performed in commercials, film and television.

Defining Statement
The Lula Washington Dance Theatre is a 10-member modern dance company that was founded in 1980 with a $25 loan and a dream.Based in the inner city of South Central Los Angeles, California, this company has risen to become one of the largest and most admired African-American dance companies in the West. Lula Washington is the main choreographer and the artistic “voice” of the company. But she augments her work with choreography by famous artists such as Donald Byrd and Donald McKayle, and with the work of talented young choreographers, including Bernard Gaddis and soon, Christopher Huggins (both formerly of the Ailey Company).
The company is known for exploring theatrical, entertaining, and energetic works that are accessible to all audiences. Choreography is set to a range of music from experimental to blues, including: Taj Mahal, Vivaldi, Bach, Chopin, John Coltrane, Bob Marley, and Duke Ellington. Some works, like Lula’s "Mahal Dances," are full of humor and fun, while others, like "Check This Out!" and "What About Watts?," tap into the political and emotional undercurrent of the black community. Lula Washington Dance Theatre’s repertory unveils honesty, integrity, and directness of unparalleled power.
The company is composed of young, athletic dancers, many of whom were groomed in Lula’s inner city dance studio where she works with children starting as young as three years old in a program called: “I Do Dance, Not Drugs!”
While Lula encourages her dancers to be excellent performers, she also instills in them to be strong teachers that are well oriented with children and adults of the community.
