History of Wiltgen Construction Inc.
When it comes to Rock and Dirt, Wiltgen Construction Inc. knows just what to do. We are a third generation business that began in 1945. The business has been hauling rock products, and excavating for a diverse array of projects over this entire period. The business was originally started in 1945 by Richard Wiltgen with one lime truck. In the winter, he would replace the lime box with a logging box to haul logs for people. In 1950 he purchased his first end loader, and in 1953 purchased a second truck. By 1962 they had 2 end loaders and 5 trucks to their name. Richard and his wife Viola had 4 children. All of the sons helped out with the business as it grew and grew. Garry worked with his dad since he was in high school, and at that time they would buy rock from J.F. Pavlovec and haul it to their customers.
Garry met Dianne and married in 1967. Their first son Chad was born in 1973, the same year that they purchased 40% of the business from Richard and moved to the location at 113 East Main in Calmar. In 1975 Garry and Dianne’s second son Chris was born along with the growing business. From 1975 to 1987, Wiltgen Construction doubled the amount of equipment they possessed. They added backhoes, bulldozers, cranes and front end loaders to their arsenal of excavation equipment. In 1979 they were blessed with a third son, Casey. In 1985, Dianne took over handling the books for Wiltgen Construction. In 1987 Garry & Dianne bought out Richard Wiltgen completely. After they took control, many more changes occurred. 1988 was the year they started crushing their own rock, and began buying quarries to keep their crusher busy.
All three of Garry and Dianne’s sons worked with the business as much as possible, by driving trucks, loading rock and dirt or whatever needed to be done. In 1992, Chad came into the business in a permanent capacity and is now handling sales, truck dispatching, and bid work. After graduating in 1997, Casey began his duties, which now include managing quarry operations and excavation teams. Chris went on after high school to pursue higher education at Coe College and the University of Kansas. He returned in 2011 to head up the business operations including Human resources, D.O.T. and MSHA compliance and Insurance issues for the company.
In December of 2010 the purchase of their current location at 204 East Main in Calmar, allowed for much needed expansion of their shop. Wiltgen Construction now has 14 quarries and covers 6 counties including Winneshiek, Howard, Allamakee, Fayette, Chickasaw and Clayton. They currently employ 25 fulltime people and multiple part-time people in order to offer many products and services. Let Wiltgen Construction help you with your future aggregate needs.
