DOWNIEVILLE CLASSIC

Downieville, CA (August-2-5, 2018) One of the world’s premiere mountain bike races, bookended by an awesome festival. The Downieville Classic has been rolling for over 20 years and is considered one of the Top 10 Mountain Bike Festivals in the US by Outside Magazine.  Live music, premium beer, food vendors and an all-weekend mainstreet industry expo top off the event.

  • 946 registered racers (2017). The All Mountain (cross country and downhill combined) sells out in less than two hours of registration opening.

  • Saturday is a gnarly 29-mile point-to-point cross country race up to the Sierra Crest and the descending into Downieville.

  • Sunday is fast, technical 15-mile downhill with racers reaching over 40 mph.

  • Racers podium on Saturday and Sunday for their respective races, culminating in Sunday’s All Mountain World Championships.

  • Mainstreet shuts down all weekend for the industry expo, allowing sponsors to line the streets and exhibit their finest products to a captive, engaged audience of racers and spectators.

  • There are numerous sponsorship opportunities around town and on the podium. Ron’s House of Big Air River Jump and Cozmo’s Wild Island are extremely well attended and photographed events.

Grebe Festival
Lake Almanor is the place to be the weekend of August 24th through 26th as we celebrate the extraordinary “dancing” grebes with our third annual Grebe Festival centered in Chester, CA.   Western and Clark’s Grebes (Aechmophorus occidentalis and A. clarkii) nest on Lake Almanor which is considered an Important Bird Area by National Audubon and which has grown in its importance as a breeding site for these grebes in recent years as drought has caused loss of nesting habitat elsewhere.  Late August is a great time to view the grebes as they are still nesting on the lake in colonies, racing across the water in their incredible “rushing” displays, and when babies are hatching and climbing aboard their parents’ backs.

Kayak and pontoon field trips will allow festival-goers to get an up-close (but not too close!) look at nesting grebes.  A variety of other field trips around the Lake Almanor basin and Lassen National Park will be sure to satisfy!  For more information, please visit www.plumasaudubon.org/grebe-festival
