1783 The first sustained flight occurred as a hot-air balloon launced by Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier.  Their 33 foot diameter globe ascended about 6,000 feet.  They did not personally fly until their third trip.  The second trip held a sheep, a rooster and a duck.  During the American Civil War hot-air balloons were utilized as spy  crafts.
