Josiah "Doc" Scurlock

Birth:  Jan. 11, 1850
Tallapoosa City
Tallapoosa County
Alabama, USA
Death:  Jul. 25, 1929
Eastland
Eastland County
Texas, USA

Outlaw, Folk Figure. Josiah Gordon "Doc" Scurlock was born in Tallapoosa, Alabama, on January 11, 1850. He rode with Billy the Kid during the Lincoln County Wars in New Mexico. He is believed to have studied medicine in New Orleans, earning him the nickname "Doc". He later moved to New Mexico and hired on as a cow hand with an English nobleman cattle rancher named John Tunstall. Another of the more famous cow hands was Mr. William H. Bonney, better known as "Billy the Kid". Mr. Tunstall was murdered and thus started the Lincoln County War of New Mexico. After the end of the Lincoln County War, all involved were given a pardon by the governor, except for "the Kid". "Doc" gave away his guns, except for a squirrel gun, sold a gold mine for $500.00 (later sold for $75,000.00) and moved his family to Tuscola in the Texas panhandle. Later, he and family moved to Eastland, Texas where "Doc" lived until his death in 1929. "Doc" didn't speak much of his "outlaw" days due to the many who still wanted him dead. He worked for the highway department in Eastland and wrote book reports and book reviews for students at the University of Texas.

Business of the Month - August

Jay-Way Janitorial and Chemical Supply, located at 900 West Main in Eastland, is much, much more than what their name implies.
Owners Jayne and Wayne Jones and their staff can fix you up with party supplies, as well!  Table cloths, plastic and paper plates, bowls, and carry-out containers; plastic tableware, air fresheners, paper products of all kinds;  you name it, and Jay-Way probably has it in stock, and if not, they can get it for you very quickly.
Good products, good service, and great prices are what defines Jay-Way, and this is just one of the many reasons that Jay-Way was named by the Chamber of Commerce as Eastland's Business of the Month for August!  Drop by and see what they have to offer.  Or just give them a call at 254-629-2190.

Majestic Theatre

Thirty thousand theatre goers visit the Majestic each year.  Built in 1920 by C.U. Connellee to entertain the hard working people of the era.   It seated 1,000 and boasted the new advancement "talking pictures.  It later fell into disrepair as the Connellee Hotel itself.  In 1947 it was reopened with remodeling and first showing the movie "Margie" with Jeanne Crain.  As movie attendance later dwindled it took the generous donations of private citizens to bring it back to is original glory and reopened in 1987 with a Bond move starring Timothy Dalton.

Eastland's own Rhyne Hobbs, oversees all responsibilites for the Majestic including selecting up-to-date movies, maintenance and scheduling benefits, reunions, beauty pageants, touring stage shows and many other events.

Some of our notable guests that have performed at the Majestic was Gene Autry and Champ, Bing Crosby, Shirley Temple, Billy Graham Crusade and Asleep at the Wheel.

We're proud to have our theatre open each Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Mary Falter

There are a number of ways in Eastland to get involved.  One of the remarkable organizations we have here is the Lions International.  The organization meets every Tuesday at 12:00 at The LaQuinta Inn.

In 1917 a business man named Melvin Jones felt that one should reach beyond business issues and address the betterment of the community.  There are now 48,000 Lions clubs in every part of the world.

Lions "serve"  the youth by helping eradicate blindness.  Vision screenings are conducted for the youth, glasses are provided and clinic are stocked.

Camps are supported for the children so that they will have the opportunity to experience the out-of-doors with swimming, horse back riding and many games.  There are diabetic camps, Down syndrome and other challenges.  The kids have a great time and can't wait for the following summer.

Steve Hallmark is the local President and can be reach by calling 254-629-1414.
