Fair Oaks EcoHousing to Break Ground on November 3

Fair Oaks, CA – Fair Oaks EcoHousing announces the groundbreaking ceremony on November 3 at 2:30 pm for its new cohousing community to be built in Fair Oaks, CA.

The ceremony will take place at the cohousing site (4025 New York Avenue), and featured speakers will include the architect, the development consultant, the builders, and Sacramento County Supervisor Susan Peters. Future residents will participate in the actual “ground-breaking” as part of the celebration.

This community of 30 sustainably-built private homes, including a large club house for shared meals and activities, is being developed on 3.7 acres on New York Avenue near Fair Oaks Boulevard. The location is close to the American River Parkway, Fair Oaks Village, Bannister Park, the Sacramento Waldorf School, and Rudolf Steiner College.

Owner-occupied homes will cluster around the central 3,800-square-foot club house and shared open space, creating a pedestrian-friendly village for residents of all ages. The homes range from 934-square-foot single-level flats to 1,726-square-foot two-story townhomes. Only a few homes have not yet been spoken for.

Residents will have access to extensive common facilities, including a pool and spa, workshop, garden, and the club house with a large dining/meeting room, kitchen, lounge, multipurpose rooms, and two guest bedrooms.

The project represents a culmination of more than ten years of planning. Partners in bringing Fair Oaks EcoHousing to life include development consultant Katie McCamant, CoHousing Solutions; architect Chuck Durrett, McCamant & Durrett; civil engineer Richard Rozumowicz, Area West Engineers; general contractors Katherine & Rachel Bardis, Bardis Homes; construction project manager Darryl Berlin; and Torrey Pines Bank of San Diego.

Future residents participated in the design and development to reflect their needs and priorities, creating a truly custom neighborhood. By combining private homes with a centrally-located club house and extensive shared amenities, they have designed an active and involved community of neighbors who know and care about each other.

Fair Oaks EcoHousing was endorsed by the Environmental Council of Sacramento (ECOS) and one of its founders, Marty Maskall, was honored by ECOS as a 2016 Environmentalist of the Year for her work on this project. The community has a sustainability focus, reflected in preserved open space, green building materials and techniques, energy efficiency, and renewable energy systems.

Marty Maskall, future resident, says: “I am excited about living in a close-knit community, yet having plenty of privacy. I can’t wait til move-in!”

Construction is expected to begin in November 2017. The anticipated move-in date is spring 2019.

Cohousing is a form of neighborhood development that has grown over the past 25 years to over 160 communities nationwide. Residents own small private homes and share common facilities, resources, and management of their community—offering a balance of privacy and community. Cohousing neighborhoods in the Sacramento region include Southside Park Cohousing in downtown Sacramento, Nevada City Cohousing in Nevada City, Wolf Creek Lodge in Grass Valley, and three communities in Davis. A new community called Washington House is being formed in West Sacramento, close to Raley Field.
