Gas Station For Sale

I get a lot of questions and comments about the empty gas station at the south end of Garberville.  So, I did some research, talked to the owner, and would like to pass along what I have learned.  Many community members are frustrated with the state that it is in and the unbecoming image it sets for our community.  The solution is for someone to buy it and make ita working business.  The asking price is $322,000.  It has brand new gas tanks that the current owner will work through the permitting process with for a qualified buyer.  If someone buys it and decides to use it as another type of business then they would have to pay the cost of removing the tanks.  Please contact Trueman Vroman if you or someone you know is interested at 707-443-8476.

Town Hall Update

What a month it has been!  If you were not able to attend our Town Hall meeting on January 15th let me catch you up!   We had Under Sheriff Honsal, DA Fleming, Supervisor Fennell, Commander Fabbri (CHP), Sgt Taylor (who has replaced Kenny, as he has promoted to a job up North), and Lt Young speak with us about current problems, possible solutions, and goals for the future.  The overall goal for So Hum is to return the Garberville substation to a fully staffed station in the next couple of years with the help of funds from Measure Z.  Currently, Sheriff Downey has been able to staff our local station with 2 deputies during the day and 1 at night using overtime and creative scheduling.  Sgt Taylor started his new post in So Hum on January 18th.  He seems to have energy, ideas, and a focus for law enforcement in our community.  Over all, it was a good meeting and a great opportunity for the community to turn the conversation from complaints to solutions.  If you would like to listen to the meeting, it is available on kmud.org .

Various neighborhoods and parts of the community are starting Neighborhood Watches to deter crime.  Some Alderpoint residents took it upon themselves to start cleaning a local dump site.  Mike Miller, who has been hauling trash that the homeless community leaves at the trailheads to the dump for a few years now, has gotten some much needed support to expand that project.  A video was shown on Lost Coast Outpost of John Casali’s pictures that got the attention of some neighbors to the North and Eel River Clean Up Party was started (see their facebook page here).  They have cleaned up camps and roadside dumps with the help of several community members and organizations.  They meet each Tuesday and Friday at about 10 or 11 in front of Tiger Lily Books.  They have used up all the county funding for cleaning up trash in So Hum and are gratefully accepting donations to help pay future dump fees here.

Another way we can bring awareness to problem areas is to report issues of trash, road conditions, etc. on a website called SeeClickFix.com. Communities all over the country have used this as a resource for reporting problems to various aganecies. i have talked with other Humboldt communities that are trying to get people to start using this as well. Eureka has its own reporting system that is proving to be successful. And Humboldt County has an online crime reporting system as well. The added value of SeeClickFix.com is that it maps the reporting in a public format.

This is all just information for our members to use. The Chamber has not made a committment to any of these organizations. Much of these community efforts are a direct result of us hosting Town Hall meetings and giving the community a place to speak honestly and begin working together for real change.  Many other conversations are being had about the future of So Hum and how to turn negatives into positives for the greater good of the community.

Holiday Lights 2015

We would like to have great Holiday Lights in town next year.  In order to do that, we will need a bit of help.  We are forming a Holiday Lights committee.  We would like to get each tree wrapped with a basic design and then host a contest for businesses who decorate the tree at their storefront and/or their strorefront.  We drew a map this year of all the outlets in town that are used for lights and we will be contacting property owners who have faulty outlets with a request to fix them.   We are also talking to the Town Square about the possibility of a lighted tree there with a lighting ceremony for the end of November.  Please contact Cinnamon if you would like to be part of this committee. 923-2613 or chamber@garberville.org.  We will meet in June or July to make our plans and then again breifly in September to be sure we are on track.  Our hands on work will begin in November!
