Cigarette containers for Garberville

The Merchant Guild recently purchased 4 cigarette butt containers for use in Garberville.  You should see them out next week.  We are not putting them out to encourage somking in one place or another.  We are putting them in places where we tend to see the most butts on teh ground.  If you have suggestion about where to put them, please email me at chamber@garberville.org or call 923-2613.

Notes from the office...

Spring has sprung and it is nice to see a little rain mixed in with the sunshine!  As always, there is a lot going on in our community.  Our online calendar is being updated regualrly.  I encourage everyone to add their events.  As others are planning their events, they are checking our calendar to see what days are open or filled.  Our calendar definitely reflects the diversity in our community!

I also wanted to reiterate the importance of locking up garbage cans and dumpsters so that others can not go through them creating a mess.  From what i have been told by law enforcement if your dumpster or cans sit right up against your building, they are within your curtilage and no one has the right to go through them.  If they sit away from your building, then technically, anyone can go through them.

Bluffs Closure Update

Wednesday at 11:08am ·

UPDATE ON PROGRESS OF REDWOOD DRIVE - BLUFFS REPAIR:

Despite recent heavy rains, County workers and the crew from Hi Tech Rockfall Construction are making good progress on the repair work at the Bluffs between Redway and Garberville. Work on replacing damaged culverts had been completed. Due to more rockfalls, additional scaling needed to be done to bring down more dangerously loose rocks.

This week, in preparation for installing a large metal net on the affected area, crews are clearing trees and brush from the top of the cliff where some of the anchors will be located. They will also be drilling anchor locations and then installing and cementing them in place. (The cement/mortar used to secure the anchors needs to “cure” for several days).

The mesh net is currently being custom-manufactured and is scheduled for delivery to the site by Friday, April 18th and work to install the net panels should begin the following day. I spoke with local Roads Director, Steve Finch, who told me that the contractors are confident the net installation should progress fairly rapidly. With that in mind, we are hoping that the project could be completed in a matter of a few days after the net is delivered.

I am very aware of the impact this extended road closure has had on local residents, businesses and visitors alike and want to thank you for your patience as we work to make this section of road safer and more reliable than it has been for many years.

We are lucky to have the Highway 101 detour available and the traffic increase on that section of highway is very obvious. Please drive carefully and be mindful of oncoming traffic when accessing and exiting 101 at both ends of the detour.

Opening Day for Southern Humboldt Little League

Our local Little League is kicking off their 2015 season on Saturday April 11th.  Stop by Wood Field for some fun in the sun!  The snack shack will be serving hamburgers and hot dogs from Pacific Pastures and they strive to offer a healthy selection for players, families, and specators through out the season.  SHLL has about 245 kids signed up this year on 24 different teams!  The rosters really speak volumes about how much our community is growing in population.  Usually most teams are centralized out of Redway because the outlying areas do not have enough players to make teams in all 4 divisions.  This year almost every outlying area- Casterlin, Leggett, Weott, and Whitethorn have put together 2-4 teams each!  Our little leaguers will be doing a bit of traveling this season from field to field, but what a great way for them to see this beautiful place we all call home!

The SHLL Board also wanted to thank all of our local businesses for their continued support of kids in the community.  From team sponosrships to banner sponsors to help purchasing equipment, the league couldn't do it without the support of the community.  The league is always in need of umpires.  If this is something that you would want to help with please contact Jacob at 986-1789

For more information about helping SHLL, sponsorship, or team schedules please visit thier webiste at www.southernhumboldtlittleleague.com

Come catch a baseball game and a hot dog!  No matter what your level of play, it is always a big deal at Opening Day!

Paradise Royale Bike Trail Workday

If you are not familiar with the Paradise Royal Bike Trail, you can read all about it here.  Or stop by Humboldt Underground Bicycle Repair in Redway, they are huge advocates for the project.  My oldest son and his friends really enjoy riding out there and I get quite a few inquiries in the office about where to go mountain biking here.  Visitors are often impressed with the trail and it seems like the vision for the project is really working out well.  If it is a place you enjoy also, maybe you would like to lend a hand!

King Range BLM Bicycle Trail Work Day

Chamber Mixer April 16th

In an ongoing effort to host several Chamber Mixers this year, we have decided to host our upcoming Mixer at the Chamber office.  We see it as a great opportunity to educate our membership about what we do here and how we can better represent our membership!  I will also have some information about organizing a Business Watch program as many are interested in doing so.  We hope to see you there!

One Busy Weekend!!!

The first weekend in May is shaping up to be an extremely busy weekend in So Hum, as you can see in the listings below!  I believe that the Southern Humboldt Famer's Market kicks off their season that week and we are working on an Arts Alive for the Friday May 1st in Garberville.  Events for the weekend vary from an annual Marathon to a first time Film Festival to long time May Day celebrations and more!  It will be interesting to see the diversity of people visiting our community to enjoy one event or another.  I hope it is a fun a prosperous weekend for all!

4th of July Fireworks

We are planning our annual 4th of July Firewroks show.  The 4th is a Saturday this year, so pyrotechnicians are in high demand, as most communities and organizations would like to have their show on the 4th, as opposed to some other years where some communities traditionally do their shows on the closest Friday or Sunday.  The great team at Pyrospectaculars is working hard for us and in confident that they have found a pyrotechinican that is a good fit for our show for years to come.  Our 4th of July page will be udated as details become clear.
