Notes from the Executive Director

Wow!  It sure is nice to have some rain!  I hope you are all enjoying it!  As always, we have a lot going on in our community.  Please check our Events page at www.garberville.org to see what has been added.  If you would like to add an event for your business or organization, please submit it online on the Events page.
We just finished up our first ever Southern Humboldt Restaurant Week.  We had 14 particiapting members who not only received local promtions from this office, but also from the Visit California and Dine In CA websites!  Thank you to everyone.  We will be doing this again next year and I hope to make it better!  There is also a Humboldt County Food Week in the fall that I plan to have us participate in so watch for updates on what that looks like!  If you have ideas or something to share for it, let me know!
I am continually updating and working on our website.  Currently we have a Wedding Planning page that higlights our members who have something to offer for weddings.  If I have left something out, please let me know, and I will get it added.  This is the time of year that people plan weddings for spring, summer, and fall.  Whether it is a local wedding or someone visiting, I just want to connect people to our members!
As large events get underway, you will see different promotions from this office.  I am always open to ideas!
Have a great day!

The Protection of Local School Revenues Act 2014

Every year $7 billion in property taxes promised to California’s schools never make it to the classroom.  Educate Our State is working hard to change this.
Please help us get this initiative on the ballot!  Local advocates will be gathering signatures and answering questions.  If you would like to help or donate in another way, please contact Cinnamon at (707)223-0165 or SoHumKids@gmail.com
*This initiative DOES NOT raise taxes and it has nothing to do with prop 13.
I am involved for 3 reasons
1.  I don't want to hand this over to my kids to fix someday, I would rather be part of a solution now.
2.  I do not beleive that we should be paying taxes AND fundraising teacher salaries.  One or the other please.
3.  I beleive that public education is important for all of us.
Thank you for all the continued support for local education.

2014 Little League Season!

Displaying Little League Logo 06-23-10.jpg
WELCOME TO THE 2014 SHLL SEASON!!!  Opening Day April 12
It's that time of year again to start thinking about baseball!  We have some exciting upgrades going on at the field including a new Tee Ball field & a batting cage.  Please read through all of the paperwork provided and fill out forms in full.  Also take the time to think carefully about which division your child should play in.  We realize that it can seem overwhelming to move your child up a division, however the system accounts for this, it is important that the child is challenged by the level of play.  Parents are frequently surprised by their child's ability to grow when given the opportunity!  If you are not sure about which division to put your child in please feel free to contact us or for players moving to Minor Player Pitch & Majors, they will be assessed and placed at a level that their skills can best develop.
DIVISIONS OF PLAY
All Divisions are open to both boys & girls

  • TEE BALL BASEBALL-  ages 4-7. Must turn 4 before April 5th. This division is for kids who want to learn the fundamentals of fielding & hitting. In Tee Ball players hit a ball off of a batting tee.  The primary goals of Tee Ball are to instruct children in the fundamentals of baseball and the value of teamwork. Many areas of SoHum have Tee Ball teams that practice & play games on their own home field, this varies each year with the number of area sign-ups.
  • MINOR LEAGUE MACHINE PITCH-  ages 7-10, six year old's can be waived up to this division if they have played at least one year of Tee Ball.  Last year this division was known as Coach-Pitch, this year we will transition to machine pitching for a more consistant pitch.  The kids will further develop their skills, knowledge of the rules & teamwork.  A child generally plays in the this league for 1, maybe 2 years depending on their skill level.
  • MINOR LEAGUE PLAYER PITCH- ages 7-10 & inexperienced 11 year olds.  This division is for children who understand the basic rules & skills of playing baseball. Children moving up to or who are new this division are required to attend a skills assessment day.  A child generally plays in the this league for  2 years depending on their skill level.
  • MAJORS-  ages 9-12 – This year we are hoping to charter 4 majors teams; Giants, Dodgers, Pirates & A's, players moving up to this division MUST attend a skills assesment day. Player will be put on a team through the draft system.  The top teams from this division will advance to the Tournament of Champions & the top twelve players are picked to play on two Southern Humboldt All Star Teams.
ASA SOFTBALL-  Call Rick Todd 223-1619
BABE RUTH BASEBALL- Call Corky & Janice Coffelt
If you are interested in coaching, sponsoring, or otherwise helping with SHYLL please contact Becky Crossland at (707)223-2627 or visit www.southernhumboldtlittleleague.com
