Director's Corner

Hello Members,
Whew...after the three busiest weekends of the year, for some, it will be nice to have a slight breather.  Personally, I think it would be great to have droves of people continue to visit Leadville all year long, but we'll work on that.

I believe it is important to note that the bottom line for businesses in Lake County is TOURISM, which comprises $8.5 million in revenues of an estimated $14 million in total annual revenues of the county (Dean Runyan, The Economic Impact of Tourism in Colorado 1996-2011).

TOURISM is defined as many things in this county from our rich history and heritage tourism (which is still under-represented and under-marketed) to the many popular athletic events and races that Leadville is proud to host throughout the year.  When tourism makes up over 60% of our economic base, anything that draws a visitor into our fine community to enjoy and explore what Lake County has to offer is beneficial.

I hope that all aspects of tourism continue to be pursued and represented here.  As the whole revenue pie grows, we will have an easier time dedicating more effort and resources to those pieces that may still need help to expand, such as history and heritage tourism.

We will also have additional resources available to address infrastructure concerns such as parking and public restrooms.  It is through expansion of our revenue and resources that these can be achieved, not through contraction or limitation of any aspect of our tourism industry.

Thank you, and we at the Chamber continue to appreciate the welcoming atmosphere Leadvillites strive to provide to every visitor that you meet.
