Please support the Leadville National Fish Hatchery!!

As you likely have read or heard about in the community, the Leadville National Fish Hatchery is being considered for closure by the Fish and Wildlife Service.  A rigorous local effort is underway to show the positive economic development impact the Hatchery has for Lake County and the region to government officials involved in the decision.  The goal is to show why closure would be a very poor decision, with numerous adverse impacts on local economies, tourism, and support of endangered fish species.

Please consider writing a letter of support to your elected officials on behalf of the Leadville National Fish Hatchery or becoming involved in the effort in any way you can.  If interested, please contact Judy or Mark Cole with the Friends of the Fish Hatchery for information at uugit@aol.com or at 719-486-0176.

Director's Corner

Hello Members,
I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season and is excited to see 2014 in full swing already!  We certainly have had more of a signature Leadville winter this year with one of the best early season snow totals in many years.  Go Mother Nature!

Along those lines, please make note of the many events coming up in the next 60-90 days in Leadville.  Some of them are described in the newsletter below, and more information can be found in the events listing of the Chamber's website, www.leadvilleusa.com .

We have some of the best winter recreation in the state and Western region!  Lake County has 45 miles of groomed trails and another 11.5 miles on the Mineral Belt Trail, not to mention everything available at Ski Cooper.  Whether you Nordic ski, snowshoe, snowmobile, downhill ski, hike or simply love the beautiful wintertime in the mountains, there are few places that equal what Leadville and Lake County offer.

We have discussed many times the desire to spread the distribution of revenue earnings for Lake County businesses out more from such a summertime focus, and these winter events are just the kind of thing that can assist this effort.  Don't just participate yourself with your family, but spread the word far and wide outside of just the Arkansas Valley.  Leadville has an amazing number of unique winter qualities and events, and the more these can be highlighted to possible visitors from outside Lake County, the more revenue will come in, and the easier time our businesses will have.

I am excited about the possibilities that 2014 brings!  There are a lot of efforts happening in Leadville and Lake County that are designed to diversify and solidify a sustainable economic base for our area.  I applaud these efforts and am happy the Chamber will be a strong driver for many of these efforts, and I thank you for all for your involvement and for being a member of the Chamber of Commerce.
