About Us
July has began wet and wild with storms accompanied by lightning and heavy downpours a regular occurrence. July usually marks the beginning of the summer monsoon season with almost daily afternoon thunderstorms. Although the rains arrived early (toward the end of June) they have not been limited to the afternoon hours. Wildflowers are really starting to bloom and birds are nesting. At 1.2 miles round-trip, the Main Loop Trail is the most visited park trail with small ladders, petroglyphs, and many Ancestral Pueblo dwellings. Many people also add Alcove House with its 140 foot ascent on 4 wooden ladders and many stone stairs. Frijoles Canyon experienced several flooding events in recent years. Check at the visitor center about trail conditions if you are hiking beyond the Main Loop Trail and Alcove House. Juniper Family Campground is an excellent place to spend the night. The campground doesn't have showers or hook-ups.
