Visitor/Tourism Legislation

State of New Mexico Legislation
The special session ended March 4. House Bill 2 the General Appropriations Act of 2010" was introduced in the special session. In comparison to the last version of House Bill 2 in the regular session, House Bill 2 now includes $187.5 added back to Marketing and Promotion and $112.5 added back to NM Sports Authority budgets for a total addition of $300.0.

These tourism-related bills did not pass:
House Bill 189, the restaurant surtax was to create the Tourism Promotion Fund as a dedicated source of funding for advertising. It was estimated that this revenue stream could have effectively tripled the NM Tourism Dept. marketing budget

House Bill 7, the General Appropriations Act, which recommended a $1.2 million reduction in the FY11 budget which would have affected the Department of Tourism's operating budget in salaries, marketing, advertising and intertribal support

On the National Level Legislation

"The President Signs Travel Promotion Act into Law! - The Travel Promotion Act"
The Travel Promotion Act is now law. According to TANM Executive Director, Sharon Shultz, "It's a great day for America and the travel community with the United States solidly on the path to welcome millions of new visitors and in the process create thousands of American jobs."TANM reminds us how important it is that we continue to promote the benefits the Travel Promotion Act to bring visitors to local communities across the country. She added, "While travel promotion isn't a panacea for our international inbound travel issues - welcoming more visitors also requires continued improvement in visa and entry processes - this is the biggest commitment our government has made to support international travel to our country and the clearest indication to date that Congress is taking travel seriously."

Plans for new White Rock Visitor Center and Los Alamos Creative District

On Friday February 26, LAMVB staff and volunteers attended a special presentation/training at the WRTIC. Katy Korkos, Chamber Member Services Rep is also a member of the White Rock master planning committee. She announced that if progress proceeds as well as it has, the new White Rock Visitor Center will be in existence in about eighteen months. The County is still taking public opinion at their website: www.losalamosnm.us/projects/visitorcenter or you can call the Capital Projects and Facilities Department at 662-8150. She also reported on the Los Alamos Creative District. LACD is among the newest of New Mexico deignated Arts and Cultural Districts and if approved the project will focus on sharing the unique creative heritage of Los Alamos and perhaps with a shared visitor center in downtown Los Alamos. For more information contact Audrey Garduno at 661-4886 at LACDC or audrey@losalamos.org.
