To offer more flexibility for seeing and hiking the Preserve, we are experimenting with shuttles. The shuttles will offer hikers a greater variety of start times and trail choices and offer non-hikers with an inexpensive way to see a large portion of the Preserve. The North Rim Shuttle (route map & schedule), which operates out of the Valle Grande staging area, gives you access to six different trails or stops. Guided Hike - La Jara Speaks

Often rising out of the mists of a sea of valle fog, Cerro la Jara is a distinctive ring-fracture dome that is a reminder of the volcanic forces that shaped this land. A preserve interpreter will guide you up La Jara’s slopes into the forested realm above where we can peer out in all directions at the grasslands below. Stories abound along our way - - of geologic wonders, archeological mysteries and a variety of plant and animal habitats.

Movies In The Park

The community is invited to enjoy a summer evening in the park with a fun, family movie. Movies are held on Wednesday nights starting at dusk, June thru August. Participants are encouraged to bring chairs, blankets, and snacks. Movies move to different community parks every week. Last movie is 8/8/12.

Photo opportunities include the historical headquarters area of the old Baca Ranch (featuring 100 year-old cabins), History Grove (an old-growth forest), a ghost town (old movie set), and the sinuous Jaramillo Creek.
Run the Caldera Full and Half Marathon

Here’s a challenge for you! The fifth annual, Run the Caldera Marathon, takes place on Saturday June 12, 2012. This marathon provides a great opportunity to run at over 8,000 feet of elevation and see most of the Preserve. The course follows old logging roads through the forest and up and down the mountains with some spectacular views.
