Women of Excellence October Meeting
Tuesday, October 21


The Women of Excellence monthly meeting will be held at Baer's furniture on Tuesday, October 21st from 8AM - 9:30AM. Come join us for networking and inspiration from two guest speakers: Dr. Stephanie Haridopolos, MD and Dr. Sharon Noori, MD. A light breakfast will be provided by Seniors Helping Seniors.

The Women of Excellence of the Melbourne Regional Chamber of East Central Florida is teaming up with the Titusville, Cocoa Beach & Palm Bay Chambers of Commerce for an exciting Women-Owned Business Expo on November 4th! This event will be held from 5-7 PM at the Space Coast Convention Center located at 301 Tucker Lane, Cocoa, Florida. This is a great opportunity for networking, shopping and showcasing your business.

Hors d'oeuvres will be served and cash bar is available. Sign up for your vendor table now! Vendor tables are $25 each (6ft) and include admission for two people.


General admission is $5.00 for those interested in networking & shopping the various products and services offered by our women-owned businesses within the community.

Condolences

Orlando E. Brillante, 89, passed on Saturday, October 11, 2014. He was a resident of Indialantic, FL since 1964 where he always had a willingness to serve others in his community and will be remembered for his kindness and generosity to all.

Mr. Brillante served as our chamber's Chairman in 1973. He was also past president of the Astronaut Trail Association, Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis Club, and Honor America. He was a past chairperson of the Code Enforcement Board; Brevard Legislative Week-end Committee: Treasure/member Brevard Civilian Military Council, a lifetime member of VFW Post 4206, and usher at Holy Name of Jesus.

The chamber offers its deepest condolences to Orlando's family.

McCarthy, Hatt receive awards at EDC Annual Meeting
Gary R. Cunningham Distinguished Service and Volunteer of the Year awards presented

The Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast (EDC) announced its 2014 recipients of the Gary R. Cunningham Distinguished Service for Economic Development and Volunteer of the Year awards at the EDC’s Annual Meeting held October 16 at the Crowne Plaza Oceanfront in Melbourne.

Congratulations to Eugene McCarthy on receiving the prestigious Distinguished Service for Economic Development award for his significant contributions to the economic advancement of Brevard County and to the advancement of the EDC’s mission and vision. Mr. McCarthy served as our chamber’s Chairman in 1994. We thank Gene for his leadership in our chamber and our community. 

In addition, EDC staff has the unique opportunity, each year, to nominate an EDC investor as its Volunteer of the Year. The criterion for this award consists of donating a significant amount of energy and expertise in a way that has assisted economic development initiatives. We  congratulate Don Hatt, this year’s recipient of the EDC’s Volunteer of the Year Award.

'Androcles and the Lion' at EFSC October 24-26


"Androcles and the Lion," a play for young audiences, will be presented by theatre students at Eastern Florida State College Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 24, 25 and 26 on the main stage of the Simpkins Fine Arts Center on the college's Cocoa campus at 1519 Clearlake Road.  The Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:00 PM, with a Sunday matinee at 2:00 PM.  Under the direction of Jeanine Henry, Director of Theatre Activities for the Department of Performing and Visual Arts, "Androcles and the Lion" retells the fable by Aesop in which a runaway slave befriends a lion after removing a thorn from his paw.

FIT Homecoming event planned for Friday, October 24th in Downtown Melbourne

Melbourne Main Street announces FIT's Homecoming event Friday, Oct. 24th from 6:00pm to 1:00am. The event will have live music, alcohol and limited street vending. Attendees will be FIT Alumni, staff and students. The event is free and open to the public. 5,000 to 8,000 people are expected to attend.

Benefit Concert is 'For Music's Sake'
A Festival of Chorus & Strings October 25 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy    

Students from elementary school through college will perform "For Music's Sake: A Festival of Chorus & Strings" Saturday, October 25th at 4:00 PM at the Scott Center for Worship and the Performing Arts at 5625 Holy Trinity Drive in Melbourne, 32940.  A benefit concert by and for the Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy Music Department and the Brevard Youth Chorus, the event will feature international violist Lillian Green, the Eastern Florida State College Concert Choir and the Linda Utz String Academy as guest artists.  A variety of music will be presented.  Each group will perform separately, with a finale that will feature three songs with all of the student musicians combined. Ticket prices are $10 for adults and $5 for students, free for those aged five years and under.  For more information, call (321) 723-8323, extension 301.

New Director of Development Named at Habitat for Humanity of Brevard County, Inc.

Habitat for Humanity of Brevard County, Inc. (Habitat) is pleased to name their new Director of Development, John W. (J.) Brewer, III. J. was hired October 2, 2014, after a protracted search during which time the position was vacant for more than a year.

Prior to joining Habitat, the Florida State University graduate enjoyed a 30 year career of corporate, small business and entrepreneurial engagements in team, leadership and executive positions. J. has combined his FSU education in theatre, television and film, his experience in information technology, digital media and business, and his entrepreneurial skills and spirit to produce key outcomes. “I believe God opened this door at this time in my life. It was simply up to me to step across the threshold. With His guidance and the Habitat team, I look forward to serving the mission of action and vision of decent, affordable homes for deserving Brevard families,” Brewer stated.

“We are very proud to have J. as the new Director of Development,” said Diane Koenig, Executive Director of Brevard Habitat. “His education, experience and skills are just what we need to help us fulfill our marketing and community development goals going forward. We are confident he will help us to achieve our stated vision and mission.”

Embraer Breaks Ground On Legacy 500/450 Assembly Facility 

On October 9th, Embraer broke ground on its Legacy 500 and Legacy 450 assembly complex here in Melbourne, Florida. At the ceremony, which included Florida Governor Rick Scott, Brevard County and city officials, the Company celebrated this significant addition to its existing 212,000 square-foot campus at Melbourne International Airport.

The new 236,000 square-foot facility is expected to be operational by 2016. It will feature four new buildings: an assembly hangar, a paint facility, a completion center and flight preparation facility, and a new dedicated delivery center.

Embraer will add 600 new hires to its almost 400 employees in the area in a ramped up mode over a period of four years beginning in 2016.
