Local Elementary School Students Impress AFTAC Scientists
From irradiated bean plants to acid-soaked teeth, nearly 270 scientific hypotheses were on display as students from Croton Elementary School in Melbourne, Fla., showcased their knowledge during the school’s annual Science Fair Jan. 29, 2015.

For the third year in a row, members of the Air Force Technical Application Center volunteered their time to serve as judges for the fair. A team of 24 scientists, technicians and engineers from the nuclear treaty monitoring center were given a rubric – a scoring tool used to evaluate and assess criteria and objectives – and were broken up into small teams to begin the judging process.

“Some of the projects were quite intricate, and many of them showed a high level of ingenuity,” said Senior Airman Samuel Chodur, a subsurface operations manager at AFTAC. “It was a lot of fun to look at all their creativity, but it was also a challenge to select the best one out of our group because all of them were really well done.”

Colorful cardboard tri-folds fill the general purpose room at Croton Elementary School in Melbourne, Fla., as members of the Air Force Technical Applications Center weave their way through the projects.  The Airmen volunteered to serve as judges for the school's annual science fair Jan. 29. 2015. Merritt Island Boat Works to Create 380 New Jobs
Manufacturer to invest more than $16 million in Brevard County

Governor Rick Scott announced that Merritt Island Boat Works will open a new manufacturing facility in Merritt Island, which will create at least 380 new jobs and a capital investment of more than $16 million in Brevard County.

Governor Scott said, “Florida is on a mission to become the global destination for jobs and it great news for the families in Brevard County that 380 new jobs will be added to the community. While Merritt Island Boat Works considered other states for their new facility, they chose Florida as the best place to create jobs. This year, we are proposing to permanently eliminate the sales tax on manufacturing equipment so more manufacturers like Merritt Island Boat Works will choose Florida to grow and expand their business.”

Last year Governor Scott eliminated the tax that manufacturing businesses pay for the purchase of machinery and equipment in the manufacturing process until 2017. This year’s proposed 2015-2016 “KEEP FLORIDA WORKING” budget permanently eliminates that tax, which is estimated to reduce the tax liability of Florida’s manufacturing businesses by $142.5 million annually beginning in 2017.

House Passes Legislation to Help America's Small Businesses Compete

To help create a more competitive economic environment Congressman Bill Posey (R-Rockledge) supported The Small Business Regulatory Flexibility and Improvements Act (H.R. 527) which passed the U.S. House of Representatives today with bipartisan support. The legislation makes important reforms to ensure that America’s small businesses and their employees have a louder voice in the federal regulatory process.

“Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, employing about half of America’s workforce,” said Congressman Posey. “Yet small businesses bear the brunt of Washington's overregulation which increases costs and puts added pressure on job creators. It’s just common sense that federal agencies should see the big picture when adding to the stack of regulations already in force.”

The Small Business Regulatory Flexibility and Improvements Act directs federal agencies to consider both the indirect economic effects as well as direct economic effects of the regulations they craft and implement. The legislation also gives small businesses earlier input on new rules through small business review panels and requires that agencies regularly review existing regulations to eliminate outdated and ineffective rules.

Every year Washington churns out nearly 4,000 new regulations with roughly 200 of these new rules adding significant costs to businesses. According to the Small Business Administration, annual regulatory compliance costs small businesses upwards of $10,000 per employee. Posey said he has a stack of federal regulations in his office measuring more than 60 feet tall representing just four years worth of new and proposed “laws” made by unelected bureaucrats. “This is what our businesses are up against,” said Posey.
