Miedema, Steele Receive Awards at EDC Annual Meeting
Thomas E. Gamble Excellence in Education and Volunteer of the Year awards presented

The Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast (EDC) announced its 2015 recipients of the Thomas E. Gamble Excellence in Education for Economic Development and Volunteer of the Year awards. The winners were announced October 22 at the EDC’s Annual Meeting held at the Titusville Playhouse.

Established by the EDC in 2007, the Thomas E. Gamble Excellence in Education for Economic Development award is presented to an individual who has improved the field of education and/or the way students are served. The recipient has made long standing, consistent, and highly valued contributions to further education missions through community efforts on the Space Coast. The EDC presented the award to Dr. Linda Miedema, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Chief Learning Officer for Eastern Florida State College.

In addition, EDC staff has the unique opportunity to nominate an EDC investor as its Volunteer of the Year. The criterion for this award consists of donating a significant amount of energy and expertise in a way that has assisted economic development initiatives. This year’s recipient of the EDC’s Volunteer of the Year Award was Jason Steele, Director of Government Affairs for Smith & Associates.

'Scams of the 21st Century' Target Seniors
One Senior Place hosts senior crime prevention seminar Nov. 13 in Viera

No one wants to believe it can happen to them.  But increasingly, seniors are being scammed, ripped off and abused by clever criminals.  Financial scams targeting seniors have become so prevalent that they are being called the Crimes of the 21st Century by law enforcement officials. Financial exploitation among the elderly is widespread and costly, affecting both the victim and their families.  Central Floridians can get the facts from experts when One Senior Place, The Experts in Aging, presents "Scams of the 21st Century" at 8085 Spyglass Hill Road in Viera on Friday, November 13th at 10:00 AM.

Presenters include Officer Hibbs from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Crime Prevention Office, Assistant State Attorney Laura Moody and Telethia Szuba of Szuba Guardian Care, all of whom will share important information to help seniors protect themselves and loved ones.  Officer Hibbs will discuss The Latest Scams, focusing on the rash of scams inundating our aging seniors, along with prevention tips from the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

Admission to "Scams of the 21st Century" is free and the public is invited to the event that includes light refreshments sponsored by Senior Partner In-Home Care.  Seating is limited and an RSVP is requested by calling (321) 751-6771.  Additional information is available on the One Senior Place website at www.OneSeniorPlace.com.
