Over 1,500 Packages of Food Delivered Weekly
The Children’s Hunger Project has expanded to more than 1,500 children each week.  Each child will receive a package of food items specially developed with the cooperation of the Brevard School District’s nutritionists.  The package of food empowers a child to have some control over their weekend nutrition and food intake no matter the family circumstances.

According to the charity’s Board Chair, Larry Ciaccia, “This is a wonderful milestone for our charity.  It reflects the passion of our volunteers and the increased generosity of our supporters.”

The children receiving the food packages are at 36 different elementary schools in Brevard County.  They are known by their teachers to have been coming to school hungry on Monday mornings.

“Without the community’s support through our charity, these kids would have a really rough time getting food over the weekend”, according to Mr. Ciaccia.

Brevard C.A.R.E.S. Receives Jess Parrish Medical Foundation Grant
Brevard C.A.R.E.S. which provides child abuse prevention and family preservation services to at-risk families in Brevard County, FL has been awarded a grant from Jess Parrish Medical Foundation.  The grant will support the ‘Cribs for Kids’ program, helping to provide Graco Pack ‘n Play packages to families in North Brevard.

Children in unsafe sleep environments, including adult beds, are at 40 time’s greater risk of dying.  In the U.S., Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the leading cause of death for infants one month to one year of age.  Brevard C.A.R.E.S. provides sleep training through the ‘Cribs for Kids’ program at no cost, which includes access to materials for expectant and new parents who cannot afford cribs for their babies.  Last year, C.A.R.E.S. provided 308 families in Brevard with training on sleep safety, risk assessments, and referrals.  Upon completion of the training, each family receives a Graco Pack ‘n Play package which includes a safe crib and accessories.

The Graco Cribs for Kids Foundation requires a 50% match from local funding.  The support from the Jess Parrish Medical Foundation grant will support safe sleep education trainings and Pack ‘n Play cribs to a projected 74 families in North Brevard.

2015 a record-breaking year for Brevard Zoo attendance
With 463,998 people passing through its gates, Brevard Zoo and Treetop Trek saw more visitors in 2015 than they had in any other year. This figure smashes the previous record of 447,302 visitors, set in 2012.

“We have continued to see steady growth in attendance over the course of the last several years,” said Andrea Hill, the Zoo’s director of marketing and communications. “Much of this can be attributed to our focus of continuously adding new things to make the guest experience even better. We offer a really great product for residents and visitors to the area.”

Hill notes the Zoo will make more improvements in 2016, including an expanded jaguar habitat, new Treetop Trek obstacles, parking improvements and the launch of two premium behind-the-scenes animal experiences. Construction on Australasia enhancements will begin in the late spring with completion expected in 2017.

Eau Gallie Arts District Main Street Celebrates Founders Day Feb. 6
The Eau Gallie Arts District (EGAD!) and the Eau Gallie Rotary Club hosts its sixth annual Eau Gallie Founders’ Day on historic Highland Avenue on Saturday, February 6, from Noon-5 p.m. Joining EGAD and the Rotary this year is The M.O.R.G.A.N. Project who is bringing their ever popular Turtle Splash event to the Eau Gallie waterfront plus kid games and activities on Highland Avenue. Plastic turtles are raffled off and raced on the river as a fundraiser for the M.O.R.G.A.N. Project which provides therapeutic and fun experiences to children with physical and developmental needs. Purchase turtles from their website at www.turtlesplash.org.

The annual Founders Day tradition celebrates the historical roots of the town of Eau Gallie and includes live musical entertainment from HOT PINK, special activities from the Eau Gallie Public Library and Foosaner Art Museum.
