First Viera Community Turns 30
Indian River Colony Club celebrates anniversary with festivities, look back

Behind the walls on Murrell Road and Viera Boulevard, Viera's very first neighborhood is marking its 30th anniversary.  Conceived as a retirement destination for military officers, Indian River Colony Club began to take shape in 1986 with retired General Gordon "Bat" Masterson leading the development charge.  Working with principals from the Duda family, co-founder Masterson overcame numerous difficulties and setbacks to finance the project and create a private country club-like environment for members.  Today, 100% debt-free IRCC is a gated golf course community of nearly 800 homes on 453 acres in Viera, owned entirely by its membership. The community enjoys 24-hour gated security, a generous maintenance package and a full complement of newly renovated country club amenities for active adults aged 55 and over, including an 18-hole, par-72 private golf course.  Membership at "The Place Patriots Call Home" has now expanded to include up to twenty percent of former enlisted or non-military personnel over the age of 21 who want the energetic lifestyle cultivated by three decades of members.  The community is celebrating throughout the month of February, with a series of events to commemorate 30 years in Viera.  For more information about Indian River Colony Club, call 321-255-6000 or visit their website at www.IndianRiverColonyClub.com.

Registration now open for Zoo summer camps
Chilly winter temperatures may not elicit a sunny state of mind, but parents can take a big step toward summer by registering their children for camps at Brevard Zoo.
“The kids always have a blast,” said education director Chris DeLorey. “We go all out for summer camps—lots of animal encounters, behind-the-scenes tours, games and crafts. It’s a fun way to keep the learning going while school is out.”

From May 31 to August 5, the Zoo is offering a variety of half-day and full-day camps for children entering kindergarten through ninth grade. More than a dozen topics encompass animal adaptations, “gross science” and the works of Dr. Seuss. Art camps in June and July are sponsored in part by the Brevard County Community Cultural Grants program through Brevard Cultural Alliance. Aftercare is available after most camps.
An early bird discount will be applied to campers who register before April 8. Registration and more information is available at www.brevardzoo.org/zoocamps

Nuclear scientists, engineers wowed by elementary students
Young scientists put their brainpower to work while volunteers from the Air Force Technical Applications Center here served as judges for Croton Elementary School’s annual science fair Jan. 28.

Two dozen members of the nuclear treaty monitoring center converged on the Melbourne-area school to examine, review, evaluate and rank 250 science projects by students in grades 4 through 6.  Each project fell into one of three categories: physical, environmental or biological.  Students were required to choose a topic, develop a hypothesis, conduct research and follow the scientific method to lead to an outcome of their experiment.

Logan Collins, a 6th grader at Croton Elementary School, Melbourne, Fla., points out his flow charts of his scientific research to Senior Airman Matthew Goodrich and  Jorge Roman-Nieves, both members of the Air Force Technical Applications Center, Patrick AFB, Fla., where the two men served as judges for the school's annual science fair Jan. 28, 2016. Supply Zone for Teachers to Provide Free Books on National Read Across America Day
The Supply Zone for Teachers will host Shop, Read and Succeed, a giveaway event to support literacy in Brevard’s high-poverty schools. The event will be held on National Read Across America Day which is on Wednesday, March 2nd. Selected literacy specialists from fifty of Brevard’s low-income schools will receive free books and school supplies at the event.

In Brevard County, 40% of students in grades 3-6 may be considered below reading level this year. With literacy playing such a key role in academic success, future employment, and good health, it has become more important than ever for Brevard students to develop their reading skills. The Supply Zone is hosting Shop, Read and Succeed in an effort to ensure that all students have easy access to books, regardless of economic background.

In addition to receiving free supplies, teachers will also have the opportunity to meet with members of local support organizations to learn about free literacy services in the community.
