Brevard Zoo leads international zoo fundraising effort
On Tuesday, November 29, more than 1,000 people across the United States and Canada opened up their hearts and wallets to contribute $193,878 to their local zoos.

Brevard Zoo staff led the #GivingZOOday initiative, which is a zoological twist on the popular #GivingTuesday movement, by maintaining an official #GivingZOOday website and Twitter account, preparing media materials and creating a cohesive message.

“#GivingZOOday celebrates the value accredited zoos and aquariums bring to their communities through excellence in animal care, conservation and education,” said Cheri Purnell, director of membership programs at the Zoo. Purnell collaborated with development and marketing professionals at 36 other zoos.

“We started by ourselves in 2014, then brought other facilities into the fold last year,” added Purnell. “It becomes more and more successful each year, and we couldn’t be more appreciative of everyone who made a contribution.”

The Zoo itself received 134 gifts worth a cumulative $7,235. More information is available at http://www.givingzooday.org.

Citizens for Space Exploration calls for U.S. leadership in space exploration
Citizens for Space Exploration joins the Aerospace Industries Association in endorsing the Coalition for Deep Space Exploration’s message to President-elect Trump’s space transition team that “A government-led program that opens the frontier beyond Earth for ourselves, our international partners, commerce and science is crucial if we wish to control our national destiny and lead the way to a future guided by American values and freedoms.”

We believe the U.S. must build on the tremendous program progress and operational successes of our broad-based national space program as we enter a new age of exploration and discovery, going beyond the bounds of where humans have ever gone before.  Citizens supports a balanced, integrated program of human exploration that includes the Orion spacecraft, Space Launch System, International Space Station, Commercial Cargo and Crew, and launch operations infrastructure.

America’s space exploration program absorbs a minimal of our nation’s financial resources (less than ½ of 1% of the federal budget) and returns extraordinary value that benefits all our citizens. As discussed in the “Space Exploration Roadmap” paper, those benefits range from technical leadership, to advances in space science, to a strong national industrial base, to economic development and commerce, to global influence, to STEM-related inspiration for future generations.

Citizens pledges to work with Congress and the new President to keep U.S. leadership at the forefront of our future in space and exploration.
