Airport’s Bill Potter Wins Prestigious State Transportation Award

Orlando Melbourne International Airport (MLB) officials received two of Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) top awards in aviation. William C. Potter’s 40-plus year career representing MLB as board chairman and airport attorney was honored with this year’s Distinguished Aviation Service Award. MLB also came out on top with the state’s award for Airport Project of the Year for the Embraer Legacy expansion, sharing the accolade with project contractor The Austin Company and project architect BRPH.

“Bill Potter has been instrumental in the growth and success at Orlando Melbourne International Airport,” says Greg Donovan, A.A.E., airport executive director. “His accomplishments go way beyond MLB, having made tremendous enhancements throughout the aviation industry worldwide. Scaly, slimy superheroes crawling to Brevard Zoo

Climbing walls? Changing color at the drop of a hat? Breathing out of one’s rear end? These abilities may sound like something out of the latest comic book film, but to some extraordinary ectotherms, they are very real. This Labor Day, Brevard Zoo’s annual Cold-Blooded Weekend event will cast light on the “scaly, slimy superheroes” of the animal kingdom with more than a dozen temporary exhibits and daily presentations from prehistoric reptile expert “Dr. Dino.”

The Zoo will also celebrate the opening of a living shoreline “diorama” that highlights its Indian River Lagoon restoration programs. Once complete, the exhibit will be home to live mangroves, oysters, cordgrass and diamondback terrapins. Perennial Cold-Blooded Weekend favorites like stingray feeding, tortoise races and the “Bug Buffet” are slated to return. The event, which is sponsored by the Zoo’s corporate partners, runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on September 2–4. All activities are included with general Zoo admission.

Buena Vida Celebrates 35th Anniversary with a Bright Future

Buena Vida Estates celebrates the 35th anniversary of its not-for-profit continuing care retirement community (CCRC) and outlines a future in which adults aged 65 and over will have access to more health, wellness and spiritual services within the retirement community.

"Although our resort-style and family-oriented community has become known as one of Florida’s premier retirement communities over the last 35 years, we at Buena Vida realize there is still so much more to offer our residents,” said Karin Lautenschlager, Executive Director.

“We are now experiencing 'Baby Boomers' making Buena Vida their home. They understand the importance for planning for their future and protecting their estate from the rising cost of long-term care,” said Doreen Boudreau, Director of Marketing.

Mentors Wanted

The Brevard Schools Foundation Take Stock in Children (TSIC) program is actively seeking mentors throughout the county, with the greatest need in the Palm Bay area. The Take Stock in Children program provides a unique opportunity for local students (in grades 7-10) to escape the cycle of poverty through education, mentoring and college readiness. Together with our community, we are able to provide a 2-year college scholarship to our students who successfully complete the program. Students are matched with a volunteer mentor and must commit to remain drug and crime-free, maintain a GPA of 2.5 and pass mandatory state tests. Mentors are caring adults with “more to give”. Mentors meet with students once a week and provide the needed encouragement, guidance and support to help students realize the dream of a college education. All mentoring takes place at school, during school hours. You can help to change a child’s life over lunch.

To learn more about becoming a mentor with Take Stock in Children please contact Mentor Coordinator, Kristen Primerano at 321-633-1000 X 415 or Primerano.Kristen@brevardschools.org or visit http://brevardschoolsfoundation.org/mentor.
